All of my sisters are on their way to Australia presently. Then on a cruise to New Zealand after a couple days of sightseeing, then they are departing at the last port instead of cruising back to Australia (yes they cleared this ahead of time, I asked!) and spending a few days there.
I would LOVE to visit both those countries, but not with three of my sisters in a single room, and not this year with all my other plans. They’ll be gone for over two weeks, and I wouldn’t have had the PTO to cover it with everything else I want to do this year.

I wonder what the relationship is between vaccine hesitancy and things like blood donation, organ donation, etc. I have similar sentiments and motivations as @Rastiln on this.
I don’t relate to people who are looking out for themselves over others, I guess. But I’m sure they don’t relate to me, either.
Either way, we do have one thing in common: we’re both looking out for them over me.

Is it a humblebrag, though? The existence of empathy is inherited, not learned. I believe that it can be learned to a degree, but a person who has less empathy by default is likely never going to get to the same level as someone born with a great deal of it. Maybe that’s just what it is.

Interesting, I’d call empathy mostly learned. Surely some people are more physiologically inclined somehow, but I’d say starting from childhood there is a strong nurture component to whether you view other people as deserving of your compassion and assistance, or if they’re merely assets or obstacles in your way of maximizing your life.
I think our parents instill a lot of that into us. Or lacking parents does its own thing to a child. Of course one can completely reject the most empathetic or selfish parents and be totally different, but I think nurture is huge.

My mom & I were discussing the Hartford circus fire tonight. Her cousin was there. His account is pretty wild.
But I had forgotten some of the technical details. Apparently in 1944 if you wanted to waterproof a giant tent, the standard way to do that was to coat it in a mixture of paraffin wax and gasoline … the gasoline served to thin the paraffin.
- 250 ft x 400 ft x 48 ft canvas tent
- 1800 pounds of paraffin wax
- 6000 gallons of gasoline
- 7,000 people
- lions, elephants & other circus animals
What could possibly go wrong?
Also interesting was that when they realized that there was a fire, the band played Stars & Stripes Forever in order to signal to the performers & staff that there was a problem.
One thing you can do (in my view) to develop the sense of empathy in children is by having pets in the house (cats and/or dogs). Taking care of them, as well as interacting with them helps children a lot when they are very young.

I swipe my card probably 90% less than I did a decade ago, and probably spend 10x as much.
I’m in the middle of a contract negotation, the middlelady between my company’s legal counsel and the provider’s counsel, who is based in the UK.
They’ve been sending drafts of the contract back and forth subtly correcting each other’s spelling from American to British and vice versa. Analyse to analyze to analyse to analyze, for example. I wonder who will win this game of chicken.
