Brainfart, but two lessons learned: (1) don’t guess the same country twice - Albania for guesses #1 & #5. (2) Like (miniature) golf, shoot for beyond the “hole”. All my guesses were directionally East. Fail.

Didn’t even get to southern Africa until guess 5, so no hope.
took 4 for me today. First guess Montenegro due to orrientation ( maybe western was coast?). Distance direction pointed to southern africa. 2nd guess was Botswana. D/d meant one of the small ones. I thought they are both roughly round (not so), and guessed wrong third guess.

I thought about Lesotho, since I thought I wanted something in southern Africa, knew it was in southern Africa and wasn’t positive some of my other guesses were (and NIGER, which I guessed immediately after BOTSWANA, wasn’t). It would have helped a little had I been sure about where BOTSWANA was. [dumb] I rejected Lesotho because it looked so large in the picture. Really[/dumb]

Even without “Islands” in the name.
Did I set a record for furthest off on guess 2, at 9,647 miles? In effect, going the opposite direction from where I should have gone. I wanted to go west from Tuvalu, and went to the Netherlands Antilles, which would be closer to reach heading east.
i am still working on relative position of pacific island nations, but have Indian ocean islands in better command.
Choose cocos first guess (not chrostmas which is a singleton) so i could go east for pacific, west for indian. D/d landed 2nd guess correct.
I’ve learnt from todays effort that it is important to know where your guess Is located in the world. I guessed my first one without knowing where it was and then realized the directions were useless so my second guess was even further away.
Unfortunately, not necessarily relevant today, I may know little more than “it’s in Africa”. Even if I give higher priority these days to having my first African guess be one where I have an idea where it is, if the conclusion is “you want somewhere else in Africa” that may not help much. Same is true, to a lesser extent, with other parts of the world.

First success in 3 days.
Once I’d established it was eastern Europe, I thought Bulgaria or Romania because it looked like it might have a bit of Black Sea coastline in the east.

Knowing about where it was didn’t save me. A very rare occasion when all 6 guesses were within 1000 miles, last 4 within 500
Nothing rare about 6 wrong guesses though

I studied African countries a couple of weeks ago and I remembered that there was a West African country that carved out a river and its banks from another country. Got lucky at 2.

Not surprising. Getting within 100 miles on guess 3 didn’t give me much encouragement, since I wasn’t sure even where guess 3 was. And I didn’t get within 1000 afterwards.
I did a bit of research after playing. Senegal and The Gambia are different countries because during colonial times, the British controlled the river and the French the surrounding countryside.
They did try to form a single country in the 1980s but the brutal dictator in The Gambia at the time didn’t want to lose his power.
I represented The Gambia in the model UN in HS. This was an insta-get.

1 guess fewer, 1 more success than expected after first 3.

I didn’t expect this to be the answer. I picked it more as a reference point because I expected the answer to be some obscure half an island in Central America. I need to study this region more (only been on one holiday there - a 7 day cruise out of Tampa)
Lake Maracaibo was the giveaway for me. I also learned that Netherland Antilles doesn’t just include the ABC islands, and, in fact, no longer includes Aruba.

I was too scared to go into the Stans so I stayed west
Eastern peninsula and western exclave gave me the answer today.
Dont be scared of the stans. Kazakhstan is on the top, Russia’s space facilitis are there. Turkmenistan is across the Caspian (almost) from Turkiye. The tajiks are an ethnic group in the northern part of Afghanistan whuch is north of Pakistan which is north of the Indian Ocean. Becky with the good hair istan is in the middle of the former soviet stans and can I buy a vowelistan is north of Tajikistan bordering China.
Kahzkh wraps around western uzbek with straight lines, cutting it off from the Caspian. Uzbek, Tajik and Kyrgyzstan meet in a swirling knot of mess. If you can’t remember Afghanistan’s shape after 20 years of war, remember the finger in the ne that touches China. Pakistan is like a check mark with a tail in the east (i think of that as a right handed check mark) Its Indian Ocean coast is mostly ew with a turn s at the east.
