I am not a Trumpkim, but I can see the appeal and I am related and know many people who are. This mindset of seperating the country is stupid whether a sophisticated Manhattanite or a redneck from Eastern KY says it. It’s going to create more problems instead of solving the ones we already have. If your idea of how to fix America is to blow it up that sounds a little ridiculous. It’s just giving up.
It’s just an extension of federalism. Are the Scottish ridiculous for not trying to fix the UK?
As the world faces fewer existential threats it makes more sense to have governments be increasingly local focused. Everyone becomes happier.
Why blow-up the USA? Why extend federalism? Why not just embrace the existing framework of federalism?
The solution is so simple and obvious.
The United States is a massive collection of space, people and cultures, well beyond the scope of the original document. It would take a series of amendments that certainly don’t have the requisite votes in order to approach something like a solution.
This reminds me of Medicaid expansion. Here’s the current map Status of State Medicaid Expansion Decisions | KFF
At first glance, instead of breaking up the US, it seems we could just give states more choices on which federal programs they want. The standard concern is that states will turn down the programs specifically to encourage poor people to move out. I suppose breaking up the US would let the RedUS and BlueUS both restrict immigration from the other color.
You’ve said that multiple times. I don’t recall the post where you’ve listed the specific federal programs or operations that you’d push to the states.
How are blue states burdened by partially red federal gov’t? Suppose the SC overturns Roe. That doesn’t compel blue states to change their abortion laws. So people in ND don’t want to wear masks. That doesn’t impact the spread of the virus in NYC.
What are the R policies that specifically hurt D states? Is it possible that Ranger’s drum beating for more state power is better than breaking up?
They buy a gun in PA and drive over the border
Unless NYC restricts visitors, it absolutely does. People travel, and people specifically travel to NYC for their ooh la la big city vacations. (Having grown up in a city/town where someone going to NYC was a BIG freaking deal, I’m not pulling this out of nowhere).
The virus started in China and got to new york. Now you’re claiming ND habits wont affect NYC? How is that logical? We also would have had a president who did not sabotage the efforts to stop the spread. Also, we wouldn’t need to beg Republicans in the senate to freaking approve a bailout to states since we would no longer have our tax dollars held hostage by the federal government. Also would not have Donald trump sabotaging anything related to New York. I think there are some federal funded transit projects that touch NY that trump has held back. Trump also constantly threatens to defund ny for his evil reasons
Okay, that’s an idea. If NYC were it’s own country, it could pass restrictive gun legislation. It could then inspect every car and truck entering the city to assure that no one is smuggling guns in.
I never suggested making NYC its own country, but yeah if you had separate countries then there would be a border.
I wonder how many people living in ND think that going to NYC during a pandemic is a good idea.
The virus got to NYC originally by crossing an international border and an ocean.
NYC is dependent on a constant stream of cargo coming into the city from elsewhere.
I’ll agree that NYC could gain a little bit of virus protection by creating an international land border and enforcing strict limits on crossing the border. My thought is “little bit”.
This is the big one to me. New Yorkers are convinced that they send far more dollars to DC than they get back. I would expect their congresscritters to be all in on anything that shrinks the federal gov’t.
I have to ask, Why are there federally funded transit projects in NYC? How about Ranger’s idea of more state control? You pay for your own transit projects with your own taxes. ND pays for its own transit projects with its own taxes. If the federal gov’t got out of the business of paying for local gov’t, you wouldn’t have to beg Republicans to get your money back.
I was responding to the OP which was about splitting into 2 or more countries. It seems that the east coast counties bordering the Atlantic would be one country (bigger than NYC, but I thought that was a good example).
Note that in order to prevent smuggling things as small as guns, you’d need to cut down dramatically on the number of Ports of Entry.
Border could be in PA or OH, boom solved.
I’d imagine an ideal outcome would be the US split into roughly 5 countries, so they’d still be pretty large countries by any measure. I’d imagine the northeast would result in gun laws very similar to Canada so it would be all but illegal to own a handgun. That doesn’t imply we need the Spanish Inquisition at the border.
Sturgis this year had nearly 366k people, in the middle of a pandemic. How different are ND and SD? People are dumb everywhere.
i’m not entirely sure why certain transit projects are federally funded. i guess they involve interstate travel, such as the airport. i think that the LGA airport overhaul is a federal project. also, bridges? i forget exactly what cuomo said as to the exact transit projects that trump is holding back on, but i think it involved airports and bridges. we need an easy air rail transit system from manhattan to LGA right now. i think the federal government is stalling on that. would be amazing to hop on one train to get to LGA. right now, i have to take a cab or some other convoluted method. not that i’m flying during a pandemic anyway.
Well, Sturgis is not a Dakotans only festival. People came from all over the USA, and likely took COVID back home. Probably the biggest superspreader event so far this year.
Wasn’t a lot of follow-up getting data on COVID/Sturgis after the Minnesota story, though. I mean, there was a criticized model that claimed 350000 COVID cases would be caused by Sturgis. You know what helps a model validate its claims? Data.
