What's cool in smart phones?

I downgraded from the top-of-the-line Blackberry Priv to a Moto X, because the battery was wearing out and I couldn’t buy a new one. (After they were “out of stock” for several months I gave up.) I definitely noticed the difference in both screen resolution and photo quality. I didn’t really care about the screen resolution, but I did care about photo quality, and brought a stand-alone camera along whenever I thought I might want a photo.

I upgraded at the start of the pandemic to the Pixel 5. I noticed the improvement in photo quality right away. Now I mostly use my phone for photos. It’s particularly good if I need to take a photo in a poorly-lit area. But in general, it just takes photos that look good, where the Moto took photos that were fine for documenting the car that hit me, but not what I wanted for birthdays, etc.

I’m also enjoying the absurdly good battery life (still) and wireless charging.

I understand that. My friend is a professional photographer. He gets tons of really great what we call “around town” shots with his iPhone.

I asked him how he gets the right shots. He told me a great photograph is 40% composition (angle and placement of subject in the frame) and 60% understanding light. He is fantastic at getting a perfect blend of the two.

I don’t do enough photography. I should do more. A lot more.

Yes, but you didn’t sit there with the old phone thinking ‘gee, I should upgrade because picture quality’. And you likely would never have noticed without doing a side by side.

It’s only the marketing department that’s telling you to look at this stuff. They’re generating a need for it that doesn’t exist. Thus, sales.

I had to upgrade my phone because my subscribers wanted more resolution in the pics on my OnlyFans page.

Weird, my subscribers have requested less resolution.

I did. I mean, I had a camera, so I sat there thinking, “I guess I’d better bring a camera to this event, since my phone won’t cut it.” And yes, it’s absolutely obvious side-by-side.

I was quite happy with the Moto X, fwiw, despite it taking crappy photos. I only replaced it because it was getting old and its battery was wearing out. But yeah, it made a difference in my life when I upgraded to a phone with a good camera. The best phone cameras are quite competitive with a moderate-quality stand-alone camera these days.

Two pictures of my soulmate. Guess which is from old and which is from new phone.

It’s not the same day though so maybe not an entirely fair comparison

yeah, i did not. i bought a new phone because the old one broke. i’m not really into photography. many people are though and i could see that being a factor.

You might want to blur the top part of those pics.

oh, does it identify my location? I just deleted it. Didn’t look at it closely.

I assume the grinch doesn’t identify anything other than that we are soulmates?

It looked like the permits at the top of the door showed the address. My eyes aren’t great & I’m on my little phone screen so I couldn’t make it out but others with better eyes (@TheMole maybe?) might have been able to.

There might be identifying metadata on any of your photos, but I’m not tech savvy enough + too lazy to figure out how to access or decipher that, and I don’t care to identify anyone.

thanks. i almost don’t care, but might as well not make it super obvious who i am.

Metadata in pictures, PDFs, word docs etc, can all contain your full name and even address. Caution is warranted.

I’m not really anonymous here, 2 seconds on google would give you my home address. And I have had once, many years ago, someone show up here. A bit weird, but I’m not overly concerned. You otoh, have a lot denser population of crazies nearby.

i don’t know what any of this means, but if i right click on the picture and inspect it, i don’t see my real name or address in that. :woman_shrugging:

if someone is going to go through that much effort to figure out who i am by inspecting a picture i posted, they likely already know who i am by other methods. I already met a big percentage of the ao regulars and know who several others are, so it’s likely that people who post here with a much smaller community already know who i am.

I googled ‘spacelobster address’ and came up empty. Just a lot of lobster restaurants.

hi

– uh, oh. she knows whom I am –

:iatp: I didn’t mean to freak anyone out with that comment.

One new feature on the pixel 6 that is actually super useful is their “magic eraser” that lets you erase stuff from photos. Like we were taking pictures walking around Seattle and were able to take the random people we don’t know out of a picture of the space needle or whatever. Works really well.
