Now that Jaspess’s cholesterol was shown to be a little bit high, there’s an opportunity to propose a few modest changes in our weekly meal planning. (Not sure I want to know what mine is right now.) What I need is for it to be consistently warmer and less rainy outside so I can get back in the yard.

I was pretty against us getting an air fryer, but since we did, anytime asparagus is on sale I get at least a couple bunches.

Chop off the ends, chop em in half. Take all of it, or half (mixed ends/tips), toss in olive oil and dealer’s choice of spice. Air fryer for 10 minutes, perfect.

Same with Brussels sprouts, just takes a few minutes to chop rather than 10 seconds.

We always do pepper/salt, sometimes garlic, cajun salt, Parmesan cheese (added near the end), lemon.

It’s a wonderful way to fill out a meal so it’s not just ā€œspaghetti and meatballsā€ or whatever. And low calorie.

Life finally slowed down enough to get back to actual deliberate excercise this week, which means I actually paid attention for the first time in awhile.

The figurative needle finally moved but I still have time to blow it before Wednesday.

I did my first weight-lifting a couple of days ago. The garage is up to ~55 degrees and I figured I could handle that. I can handle the air, but the bar is very cold on my hands. Might stick a space heater out there and do it anyway.

I can feel, even lifting 50% of what I used to, I twinged something. Need to cut it back SEVERELY and find my new parameters. I’m sure in my first few weeks I’ll see quick improvement toward average strength, but after a few years of drinking heavily and not taking care of myself, during which I lost my better-than-average strength, followed by 50 pounds of combined fat+muscle lost, I’m both lighter and weaker than I’ve ever been.

Probably going to wait until tomorrow as I still feel a bit of strain in my right shoulder. Then I’ll start literally with the 45-pound bar and go up by 10s in weight while doing reps of 10 to see where I am. Better at this beginning stage to do 4 sets of 10 reps than to try to blast out my maximum. Regain my form and some basic muscle tone, then alternate between lower and higher weight.

You are missing muscle mass, so I recommend 5x5. Start with the bar as you are doing, and increase by 5 lbs each time. That does require some 2.5 weights, though.

Here is the website I use:

Nice thing is that there are only three exercises each session, which are every other day. Takes less than an hour.
There’s also an app, but I made my own pages in Excel, because no one needs to follow me around.

Intraweek low:149.4.

Getting serious about lifting weights so I anticipate the weight will start going back up. Across 3 sessions (Sunday, yesterday, this morning) my bench press has increased from sets of 45 pounds, to 55, 65, 75, 85, 95. At 95 x 5 reps, I think I’ll feel a good, gentle burn tomrrow morning.

Amusing that at my strongest I could do 2-3 pull-ups, but 60 pounds lighter and far weaker, I can do 4.

Will be doing legs tomorrow, just easing into things and making sure I keep good form. Protein powder is arriving today and I will start taking that.

Bouncing back up a bit. But you’ve had great progress for the past 7 months, can be turned around!

I think it comes down to the fact that it was easier not to have snack foods around when I couldn’t have the kids at my apartment. Now that I have to feed picky eaters, I have a lot of easy to eat options. Need to eat more fruit for snacks instead.

Similarly to @Rastiln I’ll be starting regular lifting soon. Ideally I’d wait til I hit 175 and then put on 10lb of muscle from there but I’ll probably start sooner. It sounds so easy on paper but I’ve only once in my life had a successful weight lifting period of time (6 months+) in like 5 different attempts.

I’m going with ā€œconsistency beats max effortā€ - even if I don’t go hard on any particular day, I’m trying to make sure I get downstairs and pick up and put down something a few times even if it’s light and low reps. Much easier to do if your weights are at home of course.

Just got back from a doctor’s appointment and my doctor expressed concern over my weight loss. Had to convince her that I wasn’t starving myself - I had literally finished a Burger King cheeseburger and french fries while driving to the appointment.

I’ve eaten about 850 calories so far today, 950 after I finish this orange, and tonight will be cooking and eating >50% of a 20 ounce (including bone) porterhouse steak, baked potato, and asparagus.

Heavy daily drinking followed by 0 alcohol ever is a large swing in caloric intake.
