we’re too far north for the snow it seems! just cold. (was 0 over the weekend at times)
The lakes around here are starting to harden up. Some idiots already ice fishing. Should be good to go this weekend, but I’m busy. So the weekend after I’m taking three students fishing. All three are Asian women. One is an absolute firecracker, she gets the party going. One is her friend (they were introduced when they both came in a fishing trip) and is also outgoing. One I don’t know but seems reserved and nervous about going on a trip with an old guy and a bunch of strangers. Like, I’m picking her up at the bus stop. Eh, by end of day she’ll be onboard.
I have a trans woman who comes foraging with me. She started out getting picked up at public spots.too, but now she’s cool getting picked up and dropped off at home.
Been windy here. Trash day today, so I put my cans out last night.
Last night before going to bed, I checked on them and they were all tipped over (not a lot of trash/recycle/organics in them). So I picked them back up.
This morning, they were tipped over again. I put them back near the house (lower wind speeds there), and now I have to hope I can hear the trash trucks coming and put each one out on the curb when their truck comes.
Or, I can give up and put them back behind my gate.
The CA fires look crazy today. Stay safe people.
We have a winter storm watch on Friday. Seems like every time there’s the possibility of wintry weather here, the local forecast is pretty useless as it puts us on the edge of the bad stuff. It could be anything from basically nothing to shutting things down for a day or two.
“Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow
accumulations between 1 and 7 inches with the higher amounts
North. Ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch possible.”
7 inches with ice accumulation on top is pretty bad here. 1 inch will be no problem at all.
Eh. Looks crazy on the TV. Shot that way on purpose.
In reality, it is a relatively small space, near Malibu and Santa Monica. Lots of brush, perfect for a brush fire. Heading toward the West American Ocean (name change pending), which should not go on fire.
And out of the 20M residents in SoCal, 30K are affected.
But, fire attracts eyeballs (so do car chases).
I have had fires near me (5 miles?) over my lifetime, though I do not live near a lot of brush, cuz not stupid. The winds bring the smoke, which affects a lot more people, who need to breathe.
You are referring to the Palisades fire I think. The Eaton fire up near Pasadena also looks pretty bad.
Hard to keep up with it all.
Another one in the North, like, The Valley, ye-kne?
Cancelled King game tonight, which is held downtown. Most King players live in South Bay, where the team trains. None of this is near the fires.
They are making this out to be worse than it is. This is no earthquake or snowstorm.
Cancelled the Critics’ Choice Awards, too. Those were to be held in Santa Monica, though.
Back in my day we had fires on both sides of LA!
I was visiting my friend in SoCal when we saw smoke in the mountains. It definitely startled me, but he said they just take it in stride down there.
I’ll never forget that day NJ looks like the apocalypse was happening because of Canada
Don’t think of it as an apocalypse: think of it as imported vapourized organic compounds - you know, all hi klass and !!
The French word is fumée, so you know it’s high klass and with the accent and everything!!
Yesterday?
And every day before that?
BAZINGA!
Ya at least my city isn’t front page of the WSJ right now BRO
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
A big chunk of Santa Monica is under evacuation orders. This is an urban center, not a brush filled canyon.
More fires breaking out near Hollywood Blvd. Keeps getting worse it seems
The commercial village area of Pacific Palisades looks gone
