Not sure but if I had to guess they looked at his cell phone while he was in custody and it was on his home screen. Seems like something the family would be stupid enough to do.
Why am I not surprised?
Biden won Michigan by 2.8%. Trumpās turnout will drop by some amount, and Biden can lose the entire Muslim vote and still win.
If you prefer straight counts, Biden won MI by 155k. Uncommitted got 101k votes. So all things equal, he still wins with them all staying home.
And uncommitted was 13.2% of the vote. Uncommitted was over 10% in 2012 when Obama ran for re-election (albeit in a caucus format). If you figure the protest movement is the difference, thatās more like 25,000 votes.
Right, this will not cause Biden to lose the election.
The economy is doing well and Trump is the chaos candidate. No one wants to go back to 2020 other than a shrinking share of the population that is becoming increasingly delusional.
I believe we can all agree that the Gaza issue will not be a positive for Biden. I do not think it is a simple matter of āprogressivesā failing to vote. Itās more than that.
It takes a certain amount of fervor and passion in the electorate to win the presidency, or just about any election for that matter. A cohort that knocks on doors, organizes ride shares on voting day, hands out fliers. What is referred to as boots on the ground. Those extreme progressives are a component in democratic victories.
Recall the excitement in evidence with the only two democrats to win the presidency since Reagan. Clinton was a dawg, but he played the sax, charmed everyone, and was a symbol of the boomers taking the reins. Obamaā¦well what an orator and his symbol as a healing of racial stress. That got the party all jazzed up.
And now Biden. Gaza is a problem. A moral problem. So is the mere fact he is running. He ran as a sane, transitional alternative to Trump. But he has decided that maybe two terms is best. Others may feel differently, but I feel betrayed. He was supposed to hand it off to a younger candidate. He did not. Itās like Lord of the Ringsā¦my precious, my precious. Fact is, he is not an agent of change, he is a classic neoliberal. And neoliberalism is doomed, imo.
Thatās the bigger issue. Yes, he was supposed to hand it off, but his choice also ended up being a dud. Harris has not stepped up the way she needed.
Bidens weakness is his age, and thatās hurting him more than gaza. 6 months to get to the election feels like a long time, 4 years beyond that is even longer.
I do not feel betrayed by Biden. He has been surprisingly progressive and effective.* The Democrats as a whole are neoliberal. The progressives within the party are only on show to garner support for youth. When the progressives actually try to gain power within the Democrats they are pushed down. This is the problem with late-stage Capitalism. The entire fun king system is about entrenching, protecting, and enriching the wealthiest most powerful.
- If you havenāt seen it the Reddit sub r/WhatBidenHasDone have some nice lists illustrating what Biden has done. THE COMPLETE LIST: WHAT BIDEN HAS DONE : WhatBidenHasDone (reddit.com)
I support Biden because he is old school neoliberal. He is a vanilla ice cream cone. That is enough to pull the middle away from the fascists. We are facing a loss of our democracy. Even if Biden wins the election the plan is in place to kill democracy in the United States. Hereās a good read on it. The New Secret Plan on How Fascists Could Win in 2024 - Factkeepers.com
Cliff notes:
- Johnson does not recognize enough of the elected Democrats to shift the house to the Dās.
- Johnson and the house refuse to certify enough stateās electoral college votes to reach the 270 minimum.
- The vote for president shifts to the state delegations with each state getting one vote. (26 are R)
- Implement the Project 2025.
- Democracy is dead in the USA.
Canāt recall if this was posted. A gift article from nyt on how to replace Biden. Biden has done a good job but just does not give confidence that he has the sharpness of mind to last another four years. Given that his potential replacement is Harris (should he falter mid-term), thereās not a lot to get excited about -
Thatās how Truman became VP! He would have never been nominated in the process we have today, but I think ended up being a great choice.
Iām not that squeamish about that as a nominating process anyway. Itās not like we donāt vote in the actual election, and the alternative we have now is just āhave the biggest nutjobs in the US democratically nominate the candidatesā which is supposedly better than smoke filled rooms. Eh, idk about that.
I donāt really have a problem with Harris, nor do I love her. Sheās just the VP. Similarly to Biden when he was VP, I assume sheās doing a good job because I hear little about her.
I remember reading that she oversaw a lot of people going to jail for cannabis, but understand she was following the laws of the state.
Should I not be liking her for something or other, or is it just lack of enthusiasm? Iād rather have a real progressive in the White House, but we have almost no progressives in government as it is.
Sheās a woman, and a liberal, and non-white.
Pick one and that is why you should not want her as president.
The end.
She is a woman who happens to not be white
I donāt think the US is ready for a non-white female President.
That is the unfortunate reality.
Oh, yeah, that too!
Let me fix my post.
When the Democratic Primaries first started before 2020 cycle, she was my first choice. But she did a very poor job or communicating what her agenda was and I moved on to other candidates.
Honestly I donāt dislike her at all, but I canāt say Iāve been impressed with her that much either. Really though how many accomplishments do VPs usually rack up in their job as VP? You are really just there in case something happens to #1. I think sheād be a capable replacement for #1 should it happen, but there are a few other Democrats Iād prefer be in the proverbial āheartbeat away from the Presidencyā but mostly because like them better than Harris.
none.
ideally, all proud graduates of Millford Academy
This makes me lean away from neutral, toward wanting this.
Iād like to see the collective aneurysms by MAGA if the President is not only a woman but also Black.
Concur on both points. I already said I didnāt hear much from Biden under Obama. There are Democrats Iād prefer, but I recognize not the entire party wants a true progressive. Bernie is getting a bit too old anyway, and as much as I love AOC I think she could use a few more years of seasoning.
I would love to see AOC run eventually though, perhaps after going for Senate or Governor. Itās wonderful watching the GOP confusion over āsheās not white, so sheās bad, but she makes me horny and that makes me scared and angryā
While lib tears are the stuff of fine wine, MAGA tears are more like spicy horseradish.
Maybe I need to investigate this more, or maybe I need to go back and see how the '21 and '23 House inaugurations went, but I thought on January 3 there is no Speaker of the House, which is why the first order of business is āpick a Speaker.ā Once thatās done, that person gets sworn in, then that person swears everyone else in Congress in. I donāt see how Johnson - who wonāt be Speaker of the House, because that position is vacant when everyoneās term expires - can carry out everything in this step if heās not elected Speaker.
If heās elected Speaker? Then that means Republicans control the House, and then I can see the rest of the steps playing out.
As much as I loathe the thought of another Trump Presidency, there is a potential small positive to it. If Trump loses a close election the resulting level of civil unrest by his supporters may make January 6, 2021 look like a picnic. Am I unnecessarily alarmed?
I am not saying that such a concern should sway how people vote: just saying it would be a faint silver lining in an otherwise dark cloud.
