If we wait until people are adults to start trying to instill civic pride I think it’d be too late.

On the other hand, if our country isn’t proving it’s anything to be proud of to its citizens through its own merit, why do we need to brainwash kids into believing it is?
Education of the facts is the best way to teach children to be proud of their country. Unfortunately, the jury is still out on facts, so we’re left with blind patriotism, and that’s not something I’m going to encourage in my kids.

I think it’s an excellent national anthem - perhaps a bit overplayed. If you want to hear a bad one, listen to the Australian one.

The tune for the US national anthem is borrowed from a British fraternity song that was best sung while drunk, explaining why it’s so damned hard to sing.
The Australian national anthem is at least a singable hymn-like tune, even if it is kind of “meh”.
(The Aussies really should have just made Waltzing Matilda official.)

There are a lot of people willing to admit that.
They had a vote on it in 1977 and Advance Australia Fair got 43%, Waltzing Matilda 28% (God Save the Queen came 3rd, which is pretty scary). Australia had an inferiority complex about seeming too casual back then though, so wanted a serious national anthem. Now I think Waltzing Matilda would win in a landslide.
The Sex Pistols? That would be f’ing hilarious.
Grey’s Anatomy should have wound it up at least 10 years ago, much like ER should have wrapped it up after season 9. Most people watched the last handful of seasons purely for nostalgia for the same reason you think about some place you remember being good years ago and think yeah, I should go there again - and then you go, you realize goddamn it, this is such crap … I can’t believe I fell for this and you swear you’ll never go back, and eventually you talk yourself into going back yet again on the hope that maybe some day it will be as good as you remember no matter how many times you get reminded no, this is still crap.

Every college and university that has an alma mater song: they’re all stupid and pretty much say the same dumb thing with a school-specific twist, Having everyone stand and sing it and put their arms around the person next to them and sway back and forth like it’s some happy, nostalgic time is even more stupid.
But Ted, it’s tradition. Yeah, so is the President pardoning a turkey and having it go live on some farm in Maryland or wherever they go. It’s stupid, but no one wants to be the person to stand up and say this is fucking stupid.
