I remember when Jimmy Carter had his fireside chats and asked Americans to turn down their thermostats a bit and put on a sweater to reduce oil consumption. It was political suicide to ask folks for such a “sacrifice”!
Edit: Added a link in case some folks are unfamiliar with this.
President Krasnov, who will not be eligible for reelection under the present Constitution, doesn’t have to listen to MAGA voters anymore.
The question is how much pain among Republican voters will it take before Congress intervenes with a veto-proof majority (I wouldn’t hold my breath), or before the oligarchs step in to sway Krasnov’s opinion.
Trump’s tariffs breach world trade rules as well as CUSMA for the Mexican and Canadian ones. The harmed parties could bring legal challenges but the US no longer redirects international law. The legality of the tariffs could also be challenged in US courts but not sure those decisions would be heeded either and they take time.
Failing that, he wants revenue, but even he doesn’t have the political might to impose a blanket set of tariffs to generate that revenue. Instead, we get…games.
Or, more sinisterly… there’s a reason I’ve been calling him Krasnov.
In an environment where Congress has been shown to be almost impotent, and where increasing anything explicitly described as a “tax” is a non-starter with the party in power, tariffs, which Congress has delegated the President power to impose, may be the only viable potential source of additional revenue (at least on paper, with certain assumptions, and ignoring certain risks) available to the government.
It doesn’t help that some of the political theorists that currently have the Dear Leader’s ear are those who believe that the income tax was one of the worst developments in American history and would prefer that we revert back to the time when the government was primarily funded by tariffs rather than by income tax.
Tariffs are a horrible idea. Unfortunately, they’re the only achievable idea in the near term.
