Trump Tariff Watch

Trudeau has given Canadians a Churchill-like wartime address to prepare us for the pain ahead. We expect a COVID-style economy so interest rates will drop and provincial and federal support programs will be implemented for those most hurt by the tariffs.

This is not the path we choose but what has been forced upon us by Trump. He really is trying to destroy our country.

Too bad Americans don’t hear this.

Apparently to take over the country.

I was wondering if this would be the response of the government. It’s unfortunate to be adding to the debt, but…it’s also exactly the type of thing where we should be willing to do so.
And the liberals (canada’s currently elected leadership) has already proven they can do this, by issuing assistance during covid.
I’m hopeful that they’ll be able to lessen the economic turmoil so that in the end we’re not damaged that badly.

The ontario liquor board’s website is currently offline with a message stating that it’s due to them removing all US products from their listings. My spouse is currently researching alternatives to the california wine that they drink (something that’s long past due, I’ve been suggesting that they should be drinking ontario wines for a couple of years now). And I rarely drink myself, and when I do it’s nothing US (port, creme de menthe, sambucca, corona, or rattlers).

CNN put some of his speech on its website including his message to Trump. Trudeau was impressive but it is a low bar to be more impressive than Trump.

This made me Google. Never seen that before. Hard ciders are an option at plenty of places here, but not that particular one.

Would be kind of amusing if Trump manages to kill the North American auto industry. He just jacked up the price of North American made cars and European and Asian cars aren’t currently facing tariffs.

Currently.

The farmers are already raising the alarm.

I posted this graph before but this is what the impact is going to look like:

I’m not a free trade guy, but Trump is going to have a hard time undoing this system. His tariffs aren’t high enough to encourage businesses to produce domestically and there is too much risk that the tariffs will go away in 4 years. So you end up with a type of sales tax on foreign goods and some of this stuff is necessary for your economy.

When you engage in free trade, you always run the risk of overspecialization and reliance on foreign countries. When some of these countries want out, you are kind of screwed. We simply cannot continue to depend on USA for technology, this is suicidal. The United States will continue to separate themselves technologically speaking and we’ll be here trying to dig stuff out of the ground like apes. It’s just a matter of time before americans realise they can just dominate us and take our water, minerals, oil, etc.

I think you’re putting too much faith in the intellect of a large number of Americans.

Not really worried about that. Between cutting off immigration, killing off research, defunding universities, switching to a kleptocracy and cracking down on personal freedoms and liberty, the best and the brightest will be going elsewhere.

I don’t really blame many of them for wanting tariffs. I don’t think trade, especially with China, has been very good for many americans, especially men

People are pretty greedy, even educated people. Not clear what will happen.

Sure. But the best way to combat China is by joining forces with other countries in a combined way.

What Trump has done now is make sure that trade flows will rebalance around the US.

Take agricultural products:

The US sells a lot to China. But with the higher tariffs, China will switch to Brazil.

And once that happens, the US will lose those markets.

And the US will absolutely get poorer because its exports will be curtailed. There is nowhere near enough internal demand in the US for the excess production.

A lot of them want tariffs because they believe Trump’s lies about how Canada, in particular, has been an unfair trading partner. In reality the trade is pretty fair and balance overall between Canada and the US. But if you read the comments on Fox News stories it is all about the massive tariffs and roadblocks that Canada imposes on the US whereas the US actually currently collects more in tariffs on imports than Canada does.

when you put tariffs, you hurt some industries and you help others. The theory is that in the aggregate you are worse off. However, you are also reducing risk. So I don’t know what to think of all of this. The problem is that it’s very hard to undo free trade especially when certain industries are capital intensive. It’s not like you can just ramp up production in a few months.

This is more a function of a large number of Americans who unquestioningly believe whatever Fox News or OANN tells them or their friends, and Fox News and OANN supporting the MAGA party line.
