Will be interesting to see how long the tariffs on Canadian aluminum last after Alcoa announces layoffs.
“American aluminum giant Alcoa Corp. is warning that a looming trade war is placing 100,000 U.S. jobs at risk in the industry as the company urges the Trump administration to exempt the metal from threatened tariffs on shipments from Canada.Alcoa warns 100,000 U.S. jobs at risk, urging tariff exemption for aluminum”
Trump just announced that the February tariffs that were deferred to March have now been deferred to April. I think we should just ignore him on his tariff threats rather than worry about what he may or may not do.
I think we should call him a chickenshit liar and tell him we know he’s never going to impose the first tariff on Canada or Mexico and see if that gets him to do it.
Governance on a dime, de minimis rule today and not tomorrow, then back on or maybe off, tariffs on or maybe off, maybe you should invest in America, maybe not, maybe trade internationally, maybe not, who knows? Any business is a risky proposition.
It is impossible for businesses to make any investment plans in the present chaos. I do not know whether Trump’s flip flops on tariffs are deliberate to keep the other side off-balance or incompetence. Guessing it is a combination of the two.
Canadian officials are pleading their case today to Trump to show that Canada-US border security issues have been improved (even though there was no problem to begin with on that border.). Trump will probably dismiss their case without even considering the facts which is a frustrating part of working with him. I hope our politicians insist they have reasonably addressed his (bogus) concerns and stop trying to appease him. Let him impose the tariffs and wait for American voters and businesses to complain about the consequences.
Canada backed up its case with extensive data which Trump ignored as he has a feeling, but no proof, that massive amounts of fentanyl are entering the US from Canada. The tariffs will go into effect on Tuesday.
This would be much less tortuous if the administration came out and said “we need revenue, and Congress won’t pass conventional tax increases”, and then decided whether to or get off the rather than going through its dramatic .
However, We The Idiotic People unfortunately elected a ratings-obsessed drama queen.
This trend is in full swing. Recent polls show that most Canadians will pay higher prices for Canadian-sourced goods.
I see the Canadian and US economies reverting to what they were like before the US-Canada free trade deal. Both countries will need local manufacturing to be able to sell into the respective markets. The products that can’t be sourced locally will still be imported and exported but the trade flow will be smaller.
Trump says the US doesn’t need anything from Canada.
US farmers have to import 95% of the potash they use and almost 90% of that comes from Saskatchewan. The balance largely comes from Russia.
Canadian potash producers are not reducing their prices when the 25% tariff hits next week so American farmers are going to pay for the increase. American farmers love Trump so far but that love will be tested hopefully after the tariffs bite them.
You make the mistake that facts matter. US farmers will continue supporting Trump even after they start paying more for their fertilizer. They will blame Canada instead. Nothing that Trump does will lose MAGA support even if it hurts MAGA supporters.
