Trump Tariff Watch

How would this even work?

The money is gone (spent by Fed Govt). They would have to sue to get it back.

FedEx is a “customs broker”. They pay the tariff on shipments then include the tariff charge on your bill.

They probably have records of bills.

The article essentially indicates that the logistics/mechanism of refunding tariffs to the brokers, who then would need to refund the importers, is being litigated with the case having been returned to lower courts.

Sure. But we are looking at potentially years of litigation.

Not sure Fedex can do much about it here.

Didn’t some legislator from some flyover state say something like this?

Pretty sure that’s the joke, yes.

It’ll be interesting someday to see a calculation of just how much larger than normal the costs of litigation have been under our Glorious Leader’s regime as compared to other administrations.

Poilievre has announced his big plan to save the Canadian auto industry and is doing a US road trip to promote it. A bit pathetic as no US politicians will be meeting with him.

No Canadian media have pointed out (their writers are too young) but his plan is largely the 1965 US/Canada Auto Pact which was challenged by the Japanese and European car makers as it shut them out. The Auto Pact was eventually replaced by broader trade deals but Japanese car makers now make far more cars in Canada than the US companies.

Like the 1965 Auto Pact, Poilievre’s plan requires that the US build at least one car in Canada for every US-made car sold in Canada. His idea will never be accepted by the Trump Administration (they probably won’t even hear about it) because Trump wants to destroy Canadian car manufacturing and move all Canadian production to the US.

Before Canada and the US had a free trade deal, US multinationals maintained significant branch plants in Canada to circumvent tariffs and serve the Canadian market. We will go back to those days if tariffs persist, especially in the food industry. Kraft is smart enough to see this.

Kraft Heinz Co. is making a multimillion dollar investment in its Montreal factory as the American food giant pushes to reshape its offerings and cement its Canadian operations at a time of rising consumer patriotism.

This is encouraging.

Here’s the consequence of Trump’s tariffs in Canada. We’ve reduced the tariffs on some Chinese electric vehicles to the point where they’re talking about opening 20 dealerships next year to sell I think the 49K cars they’re allowed to sell.

Australia has about 95 BYD dealerships.

EU and Australia sign trade deal.

I see EU-Canada-Australia-Mercosur as the future, as it gives the combined population food security and resource security, alongside size and capital markets.

Australia is well-positioned as it currently participates in Asian trade blocs as well. Canada is also looking more towards Asia.

I had to look. The “Sealion 5” is a “RAV4 - sized” plug in hybrid.

It starts at $34,000 Australian dollars which is about $24,000 USD.

Here in the US, the cheapest hybrid RAV4 starts at $32,000. I found one review that said the BYD has a nicer interior and more features but the Toyota had better ride/handling and more power, but is an ordinary hybrid.

I’m curious what Canadians will think.

BYD is also growing in Brazil. Almost 5% market share now.

Have been seeing their cars pop up in Rio as well.

I think they are now also looking to manufacture the cars locally in Brazil.

I’ve heard people saying BYDs are everywhere in Australia. Depending how badly Trump has screwed up oil markets long-term, we could see massive uptakes of EVs if gas starts hitting $3/liter in Canada

Lol. Your post just made me realize how Trump could address high gas prices - go metric! It would be kind of funny to see him present the graph with the huge discontinuity due to change in units.
