Trump Tariff Watch

Just bumped tariffs up to 15%

I wonder, does he still seize the authority to practically keep the tariffs from affecting certain industries, companies or countries of his choosing ?

US Air Force deployed more than 50 fighter jets to the Middle East over the last 24 hours US Air Force deployed more than 50 fighter jets to the Middle East over the last 24 hours

Does anybody other than country leaders and the odd corporate leader care anymore? I assume everyone’s busy regrowing trade tendrils outside of the US, so this is just more noise. No, no one’s looking to continue to do businsess with the US, so tariff 10%, tariff 15%, why would we care?

US-based SMEs will care. They are getting hit hard by the tariffs. Trump keeps ignoring them at his own peril.

The more important question is that in any healthy nation a President telling the Supreme Court that it has been swayed by external actors without providing proofs of his claim would be unacceptable and probably lead to his own impeachment. In the US, the majority seems to not care anymore

Trump has succeeded in normalising his corrosive authoritarian behavior, so my expectation is that he will continue to ramp it up even more now.

I am totally guessing, but my take is that the line of succession is so polluted with assholes that having the head of the snake be a total imbecile is actually the best outcome.

But American consumers didn’t pay the tariffs (not directly), American importers did. Most folks aren’t entitled to a tariff rebate. The importers are, but none of that rebate money will make it back to your average American. Those cartoons just feed a misconception.

Or confirm that it’s a misconception, since the tariff rebates will not arrive.

This is what happens when you have economic policy being decided by the Mango Mussolini on a whim.

“John Barron”, known Trump alter ego, called into a talk show to complain about SCOTUS tariff ruling.

Almost certain this is a good impersonator as it’s way more lucid and funny than Trump has been in a while:

Wouldn’t it have to prove damages to itself?

I would imagine the recordkeeping of tariff expenditure is particularly clean at present.

No big surprise that the US will continue to charge tariffs under any future Canada-US trade deal but what is the incentive for Canada to even pursue a deal? The US will just buy what it wants to from Canada with or without a deal. Good luck though to US car companies selling any cars to Canada that are made in the USA. The decline has already started.

Canada needs to just accept increased tariffs, U.S. says

U.S. trade envoy Jamieson Greer says Canada needs to accept increased tariffs as part of any trade deal with the Trump administration, including a possible renewal of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

I’ve been watching this for a bit, coming out of COVID with the CHIPS Act and the IRA, we saw a steep increase in spending on building or upgrading manufacturing facilities. That peaked in Oct 2024 and hasn’t started going back up.

I’m just waiting, I just know the $17T or whatever it is this week will start pouring in any day now.

Tariffs during Mr. Trump’s first term produced an additional 1,000 jobs at steel mills while eliminating 75,000 positions throughout manufacturing, the two economists calculated in another paper.
