More EVs and more green energy will be the outcome of Trump policy. The irony.
The main reason Canadians went to Lewiston and Niagara Falls NY was that gas was cheaper. Niagara Falls Ontario and Niagara-on-the-Lake are much more attractive towns.
The price differential has now become marginal: who wants the potential hassle of US border officials to save a few bucks on gas? Trump was the final nail in the coffin. The number of Canadians crossing this border will not rebound anytime soon.
Out of curiosity I did a quick calculation. At $1.60 cdn /liter, which is about average in Niagara Falls Ont. and .72 US per Canadian dollar, it works out to around 4.36 US/gallon. Typical price in Niagara Fals NY is around 3.90/gallon.
Thanks.
That’s not much incentive to cross the border.
How much have Canadian gas prices increased (in cents cdn/liter)?.
$1.34/litre about 2 weeks ago, $1.67/litre in the last couple of days.
I think I saw that we’re getting up around $1.70-$1.90. I think oil prices are supposed to dramatically escalate in the next week or two as supplies run out.
CAA has an increase of 44 cents in March. That translates to about $1.20 US/gallon which exceeds the $1.00 average increase in the US so there has been any narrowing of the gas price differential..
Considering that my long-time back-of-the-envelope approximation is that petrol prices in QC are 25% higher than in CT…that feels like a similar trajectory.
US-Canada trade talks going nowhere with this ridiculous US demand. The US annually sells $330 billion of goods to Canada: that number is going to shrink as Canada diversifies its trade partners.
Trump arbitrarily raises tariffs on autos from EU despite the previously agreed trade deal. A deal with Trump is not worth the paper it isn’t written on.
Needs to start creating TACO trade opportunities for his insiders again now that the market stopped caring about the Iran war.
Yeah I kinda assumed this would happen. They were the ones that incurred the tariff so it makes sense. The only trickle-down effect to consumers would be the whims of generosity stemming from the corporate windfall. Which may or may not exist.
Yup. Airbus/Bombardier will make all these jets in Quebec and none in their Alabama plant. They will only use their US operations to build planes for the US market. I expect many other corporations will find it increasingly difficult to export much from their US plants to other countries.
Poilievre must hate the following comments from the CEO of the buyer:
**Mr. Carney helped seal the deal, Mr. Fernandes told The Globe.
“I think Mark Carney’s great for our brand,” he said. “He’s very popular in Asia. He’s been a great ambassador for Canada.”
Mr. Fernandes said that more business used to be done between Canada and Asia, but that “Canada’s always played second fiddle in many ways, to the United States, right?“
But he feels that Mr. Carney has changed that dynamic. “So, I liked him. I think he’s spoken bravely and wisely. And so, I thought if we could support him, why not?”**
Carney gives me hope that the US could elect a similarly competent leader one day
We did, but he was black so some people don’t count it.
