Little change for Canada as most of the tariffs he has imposed on Canada are not covered by the ruling.

Creating a National Emergency.

Of course the usual SCOTUS suspects that rule for Trump every time regardless of constitutionality did so again.

Maybe I’m missing something (partially because I haven’t read the previous ruling in the case that they are letting stand) but I don’t immediately see anything in the decision addressing refunds.

Not sure there is any way to claw that money back. What would be the mechanism, and who would get the $$?

about damn time

They will stall and hope the next administration has to deal with it so they can point fingers at how irresponsible the new people are with government funds.

Very cynical lol

But also likely accurate.

Before folks celebrate too much, I’ll point out this observation from the NYT live blog on the ruling:

Also, FWIW, the NYT has this depiction of the scope of tariffs:

Thomas and Alito are two of the worst justices in the history of the court.

Its time for Congress to do its job.

Gorsuch, who was nominated by Donald Trump to the court in 2017, offered a staunch defence of the legislative process, calling it a “bulwark of liberty”.

“Most major decisions affecting the rights and responsibilities of the American people . . . are funneled through the legislative process for a reason,” Gorsuch wrote. “Yes, legislating can be hard and take time. And, yes, it can be tempting to bypass Congress when some pressing problem arises. But the deliberative nature of the legislative process was the whole point of its design.”

Both Biden and Trump have used Section 232 extensively against Canada. Those are the tariffs that are killing us now.

He will impose a tariff on the SC.

They left it open. So now the lawsuits will begin to determine that en masse.

Best guess is Congress retroactively approves the back tariffs to avoid refunds and then either punts tariff authority to Trump or takes it back. I have no idea if it will play out that way but it seems a semi-reasonable way for Congress to go, not that they are ever really reasonable.

Trump Has Public Meltdown After Supreme Court Tariff Ruling, Calls Justices ‘a Disgrace’ and Vows More Tariffs Anyway

10% global tariff for all!

I wonder if the SC is regretting giving him basically unlimited immunity?

I get it, when you own something it is frustrating when it doesn’t work as you hoped

Only 1/3 of them, I’m guessing.

I thought that dis-inviting them from the SOTU was perfectly on brand for Trump.

I recall last year’s SOTU when Trump seemed to seek out Roberts and thank him for his support. This year, don’t bother to come.

(Also, the SOTU is in the Capitol building, I believe the Speaker invites Trump. So Trump is a guest, not the host.)
