Tariffs almost fully passing through now.
Other recent studies have made similar findings about the hit to Americans from tariffs. A report by Germany’s Kiel Institute last month found a tariff pass-through rate of 96 per cent, while a January study by the National Bureau of Economic Research put the figure at 94 per cent.
A paper last week from the non-partisan Tax Foundation think-tank found that the tariffs amounted to an average tax increase on US households of $1,000 in 2025 and $1,300 in 2026.
Kinda makes sense that the share borne by companies should follow a decay curve.
They can’t immediately pass on all the cost and price above competitors, but they can all inch up their prices as competitors do. Similar concept to gas stations, but they jump up and inch down.
I wonder if the real benefit of the tariffs wasn’t the enormous power it gave trump because he could choose what to tax, and what not, based on his personal preference. From that (his) perspective, it may be a huge success.

The number of international arrivals to the US dropped by 5.4 per cent in 2025 compared with the previous year.

It will be interesting to see what happens now. I predict little change. Trump will continue randomly threatening to impose tariffs on countries.
