Trump Tariff Watch

Why do you hate America?

This was Canada’s strategy in the tariff wars during Trump’s first administration and also a part of it this time. Jack Daniels always gets whacked.

I am periodically reminded of the fact that there is a tariff on coffee. I would like at least a pretense of logical policies.

Well here’s the thing, we’ll increase emissions to increase global warming and then we’ll be growing coffee in Alaska. Millions of human beings harvesting tiny little beans, that kind of thing will come to America!

Not just us: Trump is using tariffs to pressure other countries to reduce use of renewables.

I also like how Republican voters say that there is too much regulation, then back someone who cancels already approved and nearly completed wind farms.

Trump is trying to portray the courts as the enemy of the people. Classic ploy by wannabe dictators.

And the reporters who say “mean” things about him and politicians who oppose him.

The economy was like numbers you’ve never seen, much better than horrible Bidenomics, until the crooked judges who hate America ended the tariffs and that’s why you’re poor now!

As expected, US debt yields rising as a consequence of Trump and his tariff antics (which will very likely be ruled illegal in many cases).

Investors are piling into gold and private credit now.

Premier Ford overreacting a bit? I will continue buying Crown Royal as it is a great Canadian whiskey and the contents are still sourced and distilled in Canada despite the bottling being switched to the US.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is reacting angrily to news of the closure of a plant that bottles Crown Royal, pouring out a bottle at a press conference and encouraging others to dump the whisky as well.

Spirits maker Diageo announced last week that it will cease operations at its bottling facility in Amherstburg, Ont., early next year, as it shifts some bottling volume to the United States.

The move will affect about 200 jobs.

Ford is probably Canada’s best politician in terms of pandering to his base with stuff like this. He’s an artist.

Yeah but the transition years may be tough for Canada.

I agree with this. I think the results of this current mess is that we’ll have renewed agreements with other countries,a better/stronger military presence, better interprovincial trade, a whole bunch of things.

I’m astounded at how much restriction there was in trade between the provinces. Alcohol, tradespeople, etc. Lots of that’s going away. Good for us all, longterm.

Thanks Trump! Unironically.

NL is half assing signing on because the provincial government doesn’t want the job losses that will happen when Labatts and Molson shut down their breweries in the province. Provincial law mandates that only beer brewed in the province can be sold in convenience stores.

Yeah, I’ve been reading about that a bit. Tough call.

There’s going to be some ebb and flow of jobs and money. Less labatts and molson as products come in from the other provinces, more sale of Newfie liquor to the rest of the provinces.

There’s a lot of newfie’s not in nfld, I feel like there’d be a decent market for liquor across the country. Or if politicians had any imagination, start a cross country marketing camaign. What you didn’t know until now…Newfie rum, canada’s best rum now available outside of nfld! Thanks Trump!

I think if they could, they’d close the breweries ASAP as they’re only serving a local population of under 600k. I suspect more out of province microbreweries would take out 2-3 of the locals. On the other hand, I think you’re right that some of the local places would grow their marketshare. I’m not sure if we’d see lower local prices, but definitely more variety.

I thought everybody in Newfoundland drank the Quidi Vidi Brewery products? I certainly enjoyed them when I was there including their Iceberg brew which is brilliant marketing. Many folks in other provinces would buy Quidi Vidi products if they could.

I know a lot of people drink the Quidi Vidi products, but there are still a lot of fans for the mass produced stuff, and Black Horse and Blue Star. I think Quidi Vidi would do fine, but I’m not sure that they’d grow enough to make up for all the laid off staff at the unionized breweries.

I suspect the Dildo Brewery will do fine, simply because of their name. On the other hand, Bay de Verde, Banished, Port Rexton, and Landwash breweries might go under as well. The market is pretty saturated and I’m sure consolidation will happen.

They will certainly provide some stiff competition.

Every newfie that I’ve ever met drank blue light. No idea what that brewery is that you’re talking about lol.

Microbreweries nationally should be more of a thing, but I think the laws are very detrimental. years ago I visited a beer store in the US. Like a small walmart but just beer. Aisle after aisle of microbrewery after microbrewer - hundreds of them. There’s nothing like that in Canada that I’ve ever seen, but there should be. I think again, it’s regulations preventing that. But I should be able to go into a local store and visit the NFLD section and grab some brewski’s.
