Trump Tariff Watch

I expect you are right. We drove through Dildo and also bought the beer just because of the name.

Doc, it was a one in million shot.

Ontario may pull Crown Royal from government liquor stores? That would be a mistake.

Not a mistake if he can sell the idea that it’s not Canadian anymore and that it’s sold out to the US. Then it’s a great idea. If he can pull it off.
And knowing ford, he’ll pull it off lol.

About those US manufacturing jobs…

Every day I read another article like this one about a manufacturer with large US operations being severely impacted by Trump’s tariffs. Their CEOs are probably afraid to complain to Trump so I hope they are complaining to other Republican politicians.

Seems the US is going to get hit with sizeable increases in HI premiums.

I am not super close to HI pricing but I don’t see the connection between tariffs and higher HI premiums beyond the imported machines/pharma being more expensive.

most of the 7% is typical inflation. Say, 5% of the 7%. The rest if increase in costs related to tariffs and other charges flowing through, like the larger than ordinary increase in employee costs (nurses and other support staff) passing through.

History is not going to look kindly on Bessent

Because they can?

Price rises are now starting to feed through to consumers.

Large inventories + reduced profit margins created a lag that could only last so long (4 months).

Too soon to say how tariffs will impact this. Starting in 2024Q3 or so we have seen some significant increases in costs. I’m not on the insurance side, so I don’t know about pricing and risk premiums and all that, most of what I see is claims costs for traditional, FFS Medicare. Costs went up about 7.6% in 2024 (estimate, not final), and we are up about 4.4% in the first half of 2025 (also an estimate). A lot of it driven by increased utilization, not increases in unit cost - I haven’t seen any good breakdowns of that yet, unfortunately.

You may have seen the news recently that while employment is going down in a ton of industries, it’s going up in health care. Those jobs are revenue for the employees but will be baked into costs for consumers.

So it turns out that Pulte likely lied (shocker).

So not only is Trump going to lose this court case, but I think this also means Cook would have standing to sue Pulte in Civil court for reputational damage and defamation, given that he clearly use his public position to try to get her fired (with lies).

Interesting side note on Pulte’s parents:

Last week, Reuters reported that Pulte’s own father and stepmother had declared two homes in two different states as their primary residence, prompting a town in Michigan to remove a tax exemption for their home there and charge the couple for back taxes. Pulte and his parents didn’t respond to requests for comment about the matter.
