Trump Tariff Watch

Disappointed that the EU agreed to such a crappy deal for themselves IF in fact it is as Trump has announced. Of course, it is also a crummy deal for the American consumer.

If Canada agreed to a blanket 15% tariff on all its exports to the US then Carney would not be PM much longer.

No truthful source, so hard to say.

Macron would agree.

15% as long as Trump doesn’t decide to turn the table over. Silly to make a deal I think, should require congressional approval of any deal signed so you know he won’t flake.

Does the EU Parliament have to approve the deal?

Perhaps relevant…

We’ll see. Perhaps all this effort is meaningless…

This has always been my concern with any Trump deal. Deals need to be ratified in a detailed agreement with the governing bodies of BOTH parties.

Going to be interesting to watch Trump trying to spin this one.

Canadians can be as irrational as Americans when it comes right down to it. I agree with Cooke, I think a lot of Canadians are going to be just fine assuming a lot of pain if it means decoupling from the US.

In fact, I think a lot of Canadians would’ve thrown a temper tantrum over trump’s behaviour and told him to go shove it by now. I know I would’ve. Thankfully we have an adult running the country right now, so we’re not in any danger of doing something spiteful. It’ll be a measured response and negotiation, and if it doesn’t work out, I think Canadians will be fine with ‘eh, can’t talk sense to him, we’re going to eat some costs and unemployment to not have to deal with the US’. In fact, I keep seeing in the media the phrase ‘We’ll only make a deal if it makes sense for Canada’ which might be foreshadowing exactly that.

I’m not seeing the interesting part.

Well, he has run on a platform of increasing the number of manufacturing jobs.

And he is about to make it more costly to run a factory because of the rise in input costs.

Which means job losses are basically guaranteed.

So I assume he will flail about trying to find an explanation that suits his narrative.

I think Modi thought cosying up to Trump would yield some benefits.

“Obama, Biden, Hillary.”
“There, my idiot minions will believe that.”

Thing is, he doesn’t need us to believe his lies. He needs the idiots with guns to believe his lies. And they’re not all that bright. He knows it: he fomented an insurrection.

The job increases will be there alongside the 1000% price decreases he’s brought in the grocery store. He’ll just keep saying it, Fox etc will keep repeating it, and a very large number of people will believe it, whether or not it has cost them a job.

$800M in import tariffs paid by Ford.

Annual cost will be nearer to $2bn.

So much winning.

But, but, Ford isn’t a foreign country!!

These set of tariffs on Canada (35%) also hit on Aug 1st

Taco Thursday?
