wont you become states 51-60?
We shouldn’t have given up our claim on BC imo. Then we could have a made a move on Yukon.
That would be the best outcome provided we get 20 senators. Guessing at least 16 of them would not be Republicans.
For the record, any non-diplomatic confrontation towards Canada would be massively unpopular in the US.
You say this now. But Trump can polarise this to the extreme.
Trump will not feel obligated to honour the Oregon Treaty.
Best deal ever though was Russia selling Alaska to the US. As good as the Manhattan and Louisiana Purchases.
Columbia River Treaty could be a starting point.
I don’t think Trump has some magic trick. Much of what the left has recently advocated and talked about has been hugely unpopular, particularly with groups previously thought to be permanent bastions of democratic support.
Not with Trumpists though as he could convince them how evil we are and how necessary it was to invade us.
Hopefully Washington and Oregon would defend their interests on this if Trump decided to build tunnels to transport the water to southern states!
The most visceral Trump supporters, sure. But the more rational ones argue Trump’s foreign relations style is good precisely because it results in less armed conflict, let alone conflict against our closest ally.
Curious if you have concrete examples of this. My understanding is that actual policies like universal healthcare are overwhelmingly popular.
There was much movement in both directions between Canada and the US in my family over the past 250 years. And I expect many other people have friends and families on both sides of the border. Those folks would be appalled by a military action by the US against Canada. Not everyone has that connection though.
The only argument for the US invading Canada would be the greed one. There are clearly natural resources we have like water that the US would exploit more than we would want to.
Immigration has been a big one. Trump famously nuked the bipartisan deal but the democrats have been very pro immigration and particularly the hispanic voters lost have cited that as a big reason for voting for Trump
Russia?
Step one: make Mexico a state
Step two: now everyone we’ve deported to Mexico is a citizen again
Step three: profit
Just curious,
But if Trump develops symptoms of dementia while in office there is only one mechanism (25th) to have him removed?
Then,
Make China a state.
…
Fun fact, not remotely answering your question:
We have 393 Million guns of some sort in the USA. These things have mechanisms like triggers, safeties, etc.
I was thinking of that this morning with just the question of representation in the House if Canada and Mexico became the 51st and 52nd states. Leaving alone the question of whether they would be multiple states or the total impracticality of it actually happening.
Mexico has a population of ~$128M
Canada has a population of ~40M
California the largest state by population is ~38M
So Mexico would have the largest number of seats of any state with about 3.4 times the number of representatives as CA and Canada would have a 5% more seats than CA.
I’m sure MAGA world would love that. But by making Mexcio a state I’d guess a large portion of illegal immigration would be “solved”.
