Trump Tariff Watch

He could resign

In fairness the wall suddenly sounds more do-able. Take that Belize

The reality is that armed conflict would not be necessary for the US to annex Canada. We are essentially an economic vassal state of the US. That is our fault as trade with the US was always the easiest course of action and was mutually beneficial. We naively assumed that the US would be a reasonably fair partner. We were boy scouts.

All Trump has to do is to put the screws to us (even though it also hurts the US a bit) and maybe we will have to give up even more sovereignty.

On one hand, you’re kind of owning the libs by making CA less influential. On the other hand, Mexico… it’s mostly brown people.

Give up political independence? I struggle to imagine it. Economic independence is more messy, but Canada is still free! :upside_down_face:

Or better still, maybe Canada tries appeasing Trump with Quebec and then they get a win-win.

Most of the Illegal immigrants are not Mexican. Problem really is that Mexico doesn’t want them, either.
So, they’d still be our “problem” if we annexed Mexico. So, again, as I’ve suggested, Mexico’s southern border is a lot shorter than its northern one. That wall wouldn’t cost that much, and the labor will be really cheap!

Only one legal one.

Impeachment is another mechanism

I suppose impeachment could be used in a pinch. I would think it would have to be retrospective (did something ridiculous and criminal) rather than general prospective unfitness for office. And have a Congress with a spine.

Yes for needing a spine, but anything could be used, even prospective unfitness, they just need the votes. The 25th is probably the likelier path, but not necessarily.

Are these the true Democrats’ policies or the versions of things presented by right wing media? Like death panels?

Hard to see how this fits “high crimes and misdemeanors”

They certainly are, the border was hugely porous under Biden until he changed tack and the democrats basically accepted they were wrong on the issue.

Responding with a right wing talking point was not quite what I was expecting.

Note: Biden changed some policy in June to “close” the border whenever thresholds were hit. I can agree that this nominal change was an acceptance of being nominally wrong.

It’s unclear that this change did anything. Then Trump killed the actual border bill a month or so later.

I’ll give you a do-over on this one.

Reminder that a majority of Cabinet secretaries must declare the President unfit, and Trump’s primary criteria for appointment is loyalty.

It’s possible that Vance leads a soft coup via the 25th, but I don’t see it as likely when Vance is probably hoping Trump dies in the latter half of his Presidency. That would give Vance the Presidency but also allow him to run as an incumbent for two terms, with a likely popularity bump from Trump’s death.

Your chart starts when Biden was already president and the spike already happened. These are not normal levels.

And your chart shows a decreasing trend, so potentially something changed.

It could easily be called a misdemeanor, that’s the advantage of these terms being undefined and there being no review mechanism, Congress just needs the votes.

Bank of Canada lowers its benchmark rate today another 0.5% to 3.25%. Threat of tariffs one more factor in a weakening economy.
