Trump Tariff Watch

So a guy with a mandate from 49.9% of his population, about to govern a country with 4.2% of the world’s population decides to piss off the remaining 95,8%of the world’s population. The 95,8% decides we can’t trade with this country and shuts them out

How’s that gonna work out? Should we get tips from Cuba?

I wish Trump was as belligerent towards America’s enemies as its friends.

In addition to improving security in the Arctic, Canada should acquire more military resources to protect our southern border: buy nuclear weapons as a deterrent to becoming the 51st state?

Democrats, and anyone who didn’t vote for him, are on the chopping block on Day 1.
Said so himself, the liar.

The taunts from the audience on Canada becoming the 51st state are more disturbing as Trump feeds off his audience. This could become a rallying cry. Soon Trump will create justifications for attacking Canada. Sounds like Putin and Ukraine.

He’s a big history butt, er, buff, as noted in his speeches.

Even if it causes pain to the Canadian economy in the short run, I think Trudeau has to start talking and acting tougher towards Trump. If Trudeau just gives in meekly to Trump’s bluster, it will encourage his bully nature.

Our short term pain may be greater than the US pain from the tariffs but it will be better for us in the long run. Trudeau has nothing to lose politically as he has zero chance of re-election regardless.

I dont know if it’s the best approach but I want to vomit seeing Macron suck up to Trump. I guess their situation is more delicate with Ukraine.

Neither Macron nor Trudeau has much political clout at home at this time.

I don’t know why any country would invest the political capital to secure a trade deal with the US while Trump is President as international agreements will not be honoured. Better to just trade with the US as it sees fit outside of an agreement as that will be what the US will do anyway.

Salon Elysee:

Trump’s old apartment:

Just noticed, in Friday’s document that outlines Canada’s future efforts to protect the Arctic from Russian and Chinese challenges, that the references are to the North American Arctic rather than Canada’s Arctic. Trudeau may be conceding that Canada is going to be annexed by the US.

And Trump on Truth Social has started referring to Trudeau as Governor Trudeau of the State of Canada. Probably funny to an American audience but I am starting to feel what the Ukrainians must have felt when Putin said their country should be part of Russia.

Could be an interesting test of NATO if Trump withdraws from it. Or if he stays in.

As long as the spending goes up above 2% for most NATO countries he will probably not got through with that one.

Canada is however very exposed on that front as they are sub 1.5%

Problem with dealing with a person like Trump at a high level is that he will keep complaining and mocking about that (sub 2% defense spending) in every other major discussion.

I was thinking more if Trump attempts to takeover Canada

Thats bluster designed to make Canada feel bad and to put them on the back-foot.

Trump does this a lot when he sees an opponent

He is also playing to the crowd.

But I agree that the only way to deal with this is not by backing down. You have to fight fire with fire with Trump. Make a list of pin-point tariffs and hit all the major players in Congress and Senate. Same with anybody close to Trump.

Well, take it as a compliment. A more reasonable annexation would be Mexico so the southern border wouldn’t be as long (and the USMNT might become competitive, and The MLS could have enough quality teams to have pro/rel), but MEX is a shithole country (his words), so he wants you. He needs you. Like a letch needs a teen beauty contestant, he needs you. Like a serial husband needs a new foreign bride, he needs you.

I have no doubt that our military spending will increase quickly to 2% of GDP over the next few years. Happy to concede to Trump and NATO on that front. The additional military spending will mostly be on US-sourced equipment (unless we buy nukes from Russia to protect us from the Americans) so that will improve Canada-US trade in favour of US.

Well we are good-looking, I guess.

I am always good at rationalizing and, if Canada becomes the 51st state, I will reluctantly learn to live with that. However it is going to be hard to learn another language, American, at my age.
