We had some company recently who brought dogs that ran through the yard for quite a while and then came inside. We think one brought it in, and alerted them to check themselves and the dogs.
We don’t often walk through the tall grass and seem to be fine, so I’m less concerned. Just had never dealt with that and I was worried for a moment it could be like bedbugs.
I haven’t cried over the loss of Jeeves since moving to the new house (it’s easier when you don’t have a window to stare out of, wondering if he’s just going to appear). But holy balls, did “fleas” ever almost get me going. That cat was FLUFFY, and somehow attracted fleas from the exclusive indoors.
I would probably go with the largest one if I was doing it over too, but I keep it in the garage, so the bonfire makes moving it much easier. Pre-ordered the new handle to simplify it even more, and added the lid. I was a bit annoyed by the lid’s price, but man it is a solid piece steel.
I’m looking at the handle. I don’t mind moving it as-is, but my wife would definitely appreciate the handle if she were the one moving it. So the lid is thicker steel than the little ring that sits on top normally? That little ring is pretty flimsy, I already have a little ding in it from tossing in a piece of firewood.
I remember being on vacation as a little kid in a rented beach cottage and my bed was full of fleas from the previous renters’ dog(s). It was an un-fun experience involving vacating the premises while the management company had the place fumigated and some kind of medical treatment for all of the bites I had. And I think they sent the cleaning service out to change the bedding since my bed was presumably covered in dead fleas.
My parents got all their money back (or most of it? I’m not sure.)
I got an ice cream cone. Which, while appreciated, was NOT worth the unpleasantness.
True. I’ve not had to deal with them yet, thank heavens.
Hubby travels a lot, so I’m always worried he’ll bring something home. And he’s found them in hotels before. But if he does then we have a whole routine.
So far we’ve managed to keep the house bedbug free, knock on wood. And we’ve only had to execute Operation Bedbug a few times… maybe 3 or 4. Bedbugs scare me.
But the flea bites I’ve experienced firsthand, unlike the bedbugs… knock on wood.
And I’ve seen pictures of the much smaller ones that hubby’s found in hotel rooms (would’ve been happy to take his word for it!)
One of my BFFs is a pediatrician in a Medicaid clinic so she sees them all the time as the patients and their families unwittingly bring them in and leave a few behind.
I’m not sure I could cope with that, but she loves her job.
They are when you have rodents who are too small for flea treatment. We had a rough few months swimming in fleas because of that.
We have collars for our dogs and cats but the flea medicine appropriate for ferrets just didn’t work. Our vet says fleas can become resistant to stuff like frontline over time, so we had to give it time (and many, many baths for the ferrets).
It’s pretty good. Like Mathman said, there is some smoke while it’s getting up and going, so when we have people over we will get it started in advance, but once it’s on it’s warm and pretty smokeless, even with the wind.
The only downside I can see so far is that we can’t throw water on it, so we have to be mindful of letting it cool down and giving it enough time to put it away after that. Can’t be up until 2 am with a fire going unless we’re willing to be up until 4 am keeping an eye on it as it cools down.
