Goddamn, you are adventurous. Or you travel a lot. I wouldn’t even know where to get most of this stuff.
I suppose if I’m gonna try seemingly gross stuff I’d want it authentically prepared so I know I’m getting the freshest and most classic preparation, that way if I don’t like it I know it’s really not for me and not just because the cook is bad.
I forgot to mention kangaroo. Oh, and some songbird roasted on a stick that i had in Japan. And quail.
Yeah, I’ve traveled a lot. And i like to try new plants and animals.
I had some weird vegetables i really liked in Japan, but i have no idea what they are called. I tried a lot of new-to-me fruits in Hawaii, and discovered i adore Hawaiian passion fruit. Even though it looks disgusting and it gives me the runs.
Of the odd meats I’ve tried, most are meh. Meaty, nothing really wrong with them, but nothing I’d go out of me way to eat again. I have enjoyed almost all the birds, except ostrich which is incredible lean. It’s okay served very rare, but if it gets even medium rare it is super tough, and not tasty enough to be worth it.
Kudu is probably the toughest meat I’ve ever eaten, but it was also really delicious, and I’d seek it out again. The other two antelopes tasted similar to beef or horse. Oh yeah, I’ve also eaten horse. I also really liked elk.
Asian guy I hunted with last week wanted to shoot a fox. My response was, wth for, we don’t have the facility to harvest the skin, and by law we’re required to harvest something if we shoot animals. His response was, he wanted to eat it. Like dog? You’ve had dog? Him: Probably, pretty sure when he was a kid. Then he thought he’d like to shoot a marten. Nope, that’s actually illegal, they have to be trapped. so no eating cute little martens.
Then he tells me he almost shot a crow. Again, afaik, that’s illegal. Again, he wanted to eat it. I’m pretty sure eating a carrion bird like that is just going to make you uber-sick. Who knows what you’d get.
Anyway, dude wants to kill and eat everything. I got a bit of a lecture on why that is in china/taiwan from him, but still, my gawd. Some things are just a nope.
Eh, no we don’t eat those things in Taiwan. I think he’s trolling
He’s spent half his life in Taiwan, the other half in China. I’m confident he’s not trolling.
A friend had a photo of a koala in her office. She had a Chinese grad student look at it, and speculate out loud on how you would cook something like that. My friend (who is a Chinese American, but born in the US) had the picture because she thought it was cute. They had a discussion on different cultural values, and how the Chinese will eat anything.
I don’t think he was trolling, either.
But I wouldn’t shoot a fox. I really like foxes. And they help keep down the vermin. I wouldn’t shoot a crow, either. Well, unless it was destroying my property or something. But I’d go pretty far out of my way to avoid hurting a crow.
I don’t shoot anything I’m not going to eat.
If I shot a bear, I’d take the skin and the meat.
The one exception would be a wolf. I might shoot a wolf just to have the pelt. But only once.
I’ve heard that bear tastes pretty gross but I’ve never eaten it
I’m told that bear can taste good or bad depending on what it’s been eating. And the bear that’s destroying your apple harvest is good eating, but the bear that’s raiding your garbage can be pretty nasty.
I have not had grouse. SL’s food looks amazing. A cousin has invited our clan for Thanksgiving. Since we can’t contribute in a way of a covered dish, I’m planning to order a charcuterie package and have it sent to her house.
I’d extend an invitation for that contribution.
It appears we may not be hosting this year. No way I’m going to attempt cooking anything at my in-laws, their cutlery all came from Dollar General. So we will need to bring something down, it’s a 2.5 hour drive. I think I will either make or buy a charcuterie board. Can’t go wrong.
Um. Thanksgiving is over. Why are you still posting
We’re just a really thankful bunch.
Also, we like to eat.
Rancho Sisquoc Meritage, a red blend. Very nice.
Next is a Zaca Mesa Syrah.
Nice having friends who are out of space in their wine fridge, need to drink two or more bottles every time we come over, which is about once a week.
Sadly we only import the mass-produced wine from the largest California wineries rather than stuff like this. I usually buy from the better Okanagan wineries as a result.
I was wondering where I posted this!
I was supposed to post this in the “Drink Order” thread.
My wuss brother told me he might have to attend a “First Thanksgiving” at his brother-in-law’s (just married, new babies) instead of my mother’s (which will now be at my house, cuz if you thought I was old…). We asked my mom if we could have Thanksgiving on Wednesday instead. I’m letting her think it over.
Since we were talking about unusual food items eaten in this thread, I tried 2 foods that were new to me this past week: pig snouts and a fruit called cherimoya. Other items I ate this week that weren’t new to me but others might find odd: lamb sweetbreads, squid ink fritters, and grilled squid in ink
Which one gave you covid?
Definitely not the cherimoya as I ate that with COVID
