Sad thoughts

I’m going to miss all the likes I won’t be receiving anymore. :frowning:

MIL’s doggo is being put down Thursday. A few months ago his mood and personality changed dramatically, and now he will go after anyone (including MIL) if he’s wronged in the slightest way. Not something she will be able to manage in a few months when she has her hip replacement. (The vet suspects possible brain tumor in the doggo besides.)

My mom died a few years ago in the sequela after a fall. Although I was not officially her healthcare power of attorney then (she was reasonably competent before the fall and my dad was still alive), I had effectively been making medical decisions for her during the year prior. I still play the “what if” game from time to time, but I’d probably have changed one set of difficult decisions for another.

One of the things I’ve especially appreciated about my mom after she died were the little things that brought her joy in life, like hummingbirds, because when I encounter them day-to-day, it’s a simple happy memory of her.

Not really a sad thought, more a morbid one
None of you will know when I die

something odd that many of think about an_actuary dying

I figure it will be a very small group that knows when I die and I wouldn’t have it any other way. As nice as the folks are on GoActuary, I don’t expect any of them will be in attendance! I am not anonymous so eventually news of my death will become known.

Speaking of death, there is a great song by Blood, Sweat and Tears that addresses dying in a rollicking fashion. It was popular in my university days. Check it out!

what?

That is pretty sad. We’ve had posters die, and someone knew about it and posted about it and we all eulogized over it.
You should reach out (PM) to a poster that you believe lives near you, ask to meet in person.

And hope it’s not your boss.

No instructions for an SO to post adios? I am sure that’s how y’all will find out about me before traditional media. I might preannounce if I get something terminal and slow, but my money is on drop dead.

I know a few of the folks here IRL. if i went missing they might google and find out. if the kids (the ones who make fun of my “fake/online friends”) thought to post a notice, that’s more than I’d expect.

Maybe something to put in your will?

Here are my social media logins, please post my demise.

Having found out about a former coworker who passed more than a year afterwards (and posted about it here), this thought does make me sad.

Maybe posters who are worried about this should forsake their anonymity at some point so we will know they have died and we can eulogize them. If DTNF died tomorrow, I might never know!

Some folks know me from here and from the old AO, but none are nearby, and how they’d know that I had died would be a mystery. (I don’t think I need an obit in the newspaper. “DTNF died doing what he loved most: shouting at clouds to get off his lawn.”)

Lack of my posting would be the first clue, I guess.

I will miss your sarcasm after you’re gone (although the actuarial odds are that I will exit long before you).

DON’T EVER TELL ME THE ODDS!!

Ah, but the point of this forum to me is partly the anonymity

Yeah. I’m not suggesting you out yourself to all.

This song has a great tune and instrumentals!

The lyrics really need to be heard to be appreciated but still entertaining to read. Some of it below:

“I’m not scared of dying
And I don’t really care
If it’s peace you find in dying
Well, then let the time be near

If it’s peace you find in dying
And if dying time is near
Just bundle up my coffin cause
It’s cold way down there
I hear that’s it’s cold way down there
Yeah, crazy cold way down there

And when I die and when I’m gone
There’ll be one child born
In this world, to carry on, to carry on

Now troubles are many
They’re as deep as a well
I can swear there ain’t no heaven
But I pray there ain’t no hell

Swear there ain’t no heaven
And I pray there ain’t no hell
But I’ll never know by living
Only by dying will tell
Yes, only by dying will tell, yeah
Only my dying will tell

And when I die and when I’m gone
There’ll be one child born
In this world to carry on, to carry on

Give me my freedom for as long as I be
All I ask of the living is to have no chains on me

All I ask of living is to have no chains on me
And all I ask of dying is to go naturally
Only want to go naturally”
