when i had my own treadmill, it was a lot of Simpsons DVDs, X-files DVDs, movies from the library. now when i go to PF (once every couple of weeks), I try to find a rerun of some inane show that doesn’t take a lot of concentration: Bar Rescue, Storage Wars, Friends; if it’s sports, i actually want something low-effort, like golf, rather than baseball or football, where i might get excited and startle myself off the 'mill.
“Something Else”: I run outdoors. Look at the beautiful sky. Listen the pretty birds. I mean, I’m paying for it (via higher mortgage and other costs), might as well enjoy it.
I was out of town and I did a little warmup on the Hotel treadmill. Kind of glad it didn’t overlook the grey and wet cityscape. I was off in 5 minutes, though. Then, I overdid it on weight machines, as I did not compensate well enough for the difference between free weights and a machine that thinks it knows better than gravity.
I’m behind on my running app (currently on week 4 of 9, 5k is on 2/14). I thought I’d get in runs both days this weekend. However, a couple of friends invited me hiking this morning, and my legs are shot.
Hiking totally counts! You are still on schedule.
Got in an hour long run this weekend. It was slower than I would have liked but I’m glad I can still run for an hour.
Nice job!
Tried to get out on Saturday for a 6-7 mile trail run. I’ve got a 15k run scheduled for this upcoming Saturday, and wanted one more training run before then.
It was cold, like 1F when I woke up. The storm wasn’t supposed to roll in until like 2 pm, so I decided to wait a couple of hours to see if it would warm up a bit. It did, but then it also started snowing. I decided to risk it. Bundled up, double gloves and warm pants and the neck gaiter thing. Got to the trail, ran less than half a mile, and my fingers were cold enough that if they hadn’t warmed by 1 mile, I was going to turn around. Well, got a mile in, and the fingers were cold, so I turned around and went back.
But then I had a bunch of extra energy, so I went home, got changed into my “indoor running” stuff and went to the gym. Hit the treadmill (or what my buddy called “the Devil’s sidewalk”
) for another 4 miles. Finally felt like I had done enough so I could go home.
Saturday is the run. 15k on the snow that rolled in. I have zero aspirations of doing well, just wanted to sign up for the sweatshirt (80%) and perhaps to finish (20%) as this is part of a 3-race series, that included the half-marathon from November and another 5-mile race in December.
1 degree is cold. I don’t mind running in active snow when it is as cold as you had bc it is not the wet kind. (The stuff right around 32F gets you wet)
everyone is different for heating up. I get warmer than average it seems. but in your temps, it might take a couple miles for me to feel the warmth in the hands and fingers. and all you really need is them not feeling cold but that is a personal threshold and cold fingers makes me miserable.
For temps below 10 I might have running gloves with wind mittens over them and then my running jacket sleeves pulled over the hands too. I’ve been running long enough in cold weather to say i have my temps/clothing kits pretty mapped out.
good news, the 15k has been postponed 3 weeks due to deep snow on the trail and low temps. Normally it’s like 30 degrees and maybe an inch of snow in late January, which is I’m sure why they hold this race then. But with a foot on the ground and no thaw in sight, they’ve postponed to February. Hopefully we’ll get a melt before then.
Today was treadmill attempting to increase speed (distance in miles)
warmup 0.5 @ 5.5 (10:55 / mile)
walk 0.25
run 0.75 @ 6.5 (9:14)
walk 0.25
run 0.75 @ 6.7 (8:57)
walk 0.25
run 0.75 @ 6.8 (8:49)
pretty happy with that. compared to the last time I ran intervals (October), I’m about as fast but this time did negative splits. Also, this is only on a treadmill (1% incline) versus the road which has some slight ups and downs, so not perfectly comparable.
Had a good run today, so I am bragging here.
My typical run is 5 miles at ~8:45-9:00 and the last (6th) mile faster if I have it. Recently, that has been 7:20-7:30.
Today, ran the first 5 in ~8:30s and the last one in 7:08. Felt like the same effort as normal. Wish I knew why I was faster today…
I feel like I lost all of my speed when I took a few months off from running. I’ve been back for about a month and my speed is still garbage. I’ve been trying to do some easy runs where my heart rate stays in zone 2 and no matter how easy the run feels to me, my heart rate is mostly in zone 4. Maybe my watch isn’t calculating my heart rate properly but it’s getting very frustrating not seeing any improvement.
the older you are, the longer it takes to get back into it. I took a few years off of running (just walked, at least an hour a day, for like 3 years) and it seemed like it took 2 full years to get back to the point where I could jog for 30 minutes without having to walk. I’ve been slowly increasing speed again, but I’m still like 2 minutes slower per mile on a sustainable 4-5 mile run than I was before I took that break. Yes, I’m getting faster at that, but the rate at which I’m getting faster is slower than what it used to be when I was a lot younger. [Did that make sense?]
After a delay from the cold weather and letting my knees recover from hiking, I got back in the saddle yesterday.
| Week | Target Miles | Actual Runs | Actual Miles | Cumulative Target | Cumulative Actual | Over/Under Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 17 | 5 | 17 | 17 | 17 | 0 |
| 2 | 17 | 4 | 18 | 34 | 35 | 1 |
| 3 | 19 | 4 | 18 | 53 | 53 | 0 |
| 4 | 19 | 4 | 19 | 72 | 72 | 0 |
If I go running (slowly jogging) outside where it’s 26 degrees with a windchill of 17, what do I wear? Just lots of layers? Usually I run on the track at the gym but I was off today.
Yeah layers is a good idea. Maybe tights with sweatpants over them for the bottom, breathable athletic shirt with a sweatshirt or light jacket on top. Gloves too I guess. Some people need more layers than others.
Not sure when snot freezes, but you’ll want to keep your nose covered.
My rule of thumb for running is to wear what would make sense walking, but 20F warmer. You’ll start off cold for about 5 minutes but should be good after that.
