I ran close to daily during COVID, 2-3 miles at a time, call it about 700 miles in 2020. It felt like a chore. I found walking seems to be less of a chore without worrying about time, and being able to enjoy my surroundings. I try to get 10k steps a day, but average nearly 14k. 2450 miles worth last year, maybe 100 of those were running.
I am much more fit now than I was when I ran more, and I think I could actually run a longer distance now. I also gave up booze since then, and lost 30 pounds, so a very poorly controlled experiment.
I guess the question is, do you want a goal to hit 1000 miles in a year, or just want to be a better runner or raise your fitness level? One is going to be a grind, the other might be a better result?
update here. either weekly or every other. I used to track with # of runs / total miles for whatever period. Iād say you want to track some subset (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and then have the annual total in the post. I likely have similar goal of 1000. I tend to want 100 a month to feel āactiveā.
Iād planned on doing another session yesterday, but I ended up knocking out some work Iāve been ignoring over the holidays. The rain had returned, but I did get in session 4 while it was only misting out. My son isnāt signing up for the same 5k in February, but he did agree to the St, Patrickās one.
I might have a 5k goal this year. I donāt train properly enough to have time goals. maybe i try that this year and try to ārun fastā. of course, fast is relative. but fast for my current age while slower than 11 year old meā¦I still struggle with that memory. Iām not racing against my athletic peak, but it still messes me up
no idea on the actual total, I didnāt track. I will estimate 15 miles / week Jan-Mar, 18 / week April - June, 22 / week July - Aug, 25 / week September - Nov, only about 15 / week in Dec. So, what is that, about 800?
I want to run 1,000 miles in a year, because thatās the step-down goal Iāve chosen now that a half-Ironman is not in the cards for this year. I still want to complete an IM in the next 5 years. Budget and time constraints will mean Iām not going to be able to do the half in 2026 (would need new equipment and probably coaching plus a membership somewhere to train, an event like that is at least a $2k spend, etc.), so it gets pushed out. What then is a big goal I can focus on this year, to keep me engaged like the ā3-half-marathon seasonā did in 2025? 1,000 miles for the first time in my life.
Along the way, I expect to continue to reduce body weight and improve baseline fitness.
I wish I liked running. I used to when I was in college, but maybe because it was a āproductive procrastinationā way to get outside and away from studying.
The nice thing about the zero to 5k app is that the sessions are around 30 minutes. Other than inclement weather, itās harder to make up an excuse to not do it. Hopefully the two upcoming 5ks will keep me going, then I can reassess.
Iāve ramped up my running. Iām already able to get in the zone, I think I should be getting runnerās high soon :).
Unfortunately, Iām running 5-6 days a week, and that means my weight lifting isnāt happening. Iām torn, I much prefer lifting. I enjoy the exercise and I like the benefits. But I need to push the running because I need to lose 20lbs. Sigh.
Im half considering running in the morning and weights at night. Unsure if I could do that consistently though.
Pick a few days and run even 10 minutes less. Do a weight circuit that lasts that long on those days. Until you have more time (which few of us get to)
