im late to this but it has been covered already - prep for a half and prep for a full are very different. i can fake a half, but you are out there too long on the full to get exposed. even prepping for it well doesn’t mean it will go great. it’s pretty trying so if you aren’t excited to prep for it…do the half.
ran a 5k today at my kid’s school. her team sponsors the event. gpal 1 is always return uninjured, goal 2 is finish, goals 3-5 are various time goals.
5k w some roads a little slick from snow residue. some were clear. all turns were requiring care (goal 1 note). hit mile 1 in 7:00, mile 2 in 14:01, and the finish in 21:33. I actually felt good enough to care at the end and push the pace w a guy who did not respond w me. turns out I won the age group and that guy was 2nd. (suck it, other old guys!)
For additional context, the full marathon is in June, so I would have about 6 months to prep for the full. The idea of training for it terrifies me a bit, but at least I’m not underestimating this thing.
Think of it like an actuarial exam - if you put the hours in, you should be fine.
and that preparing enough to max out at a 4 or a 5 is painful
ran both weekend days a little. -2 and +6 (waited for the afternoon “warmup”) air temps still have good gear. worst part is the stuff on the roads. did not want to take 2 0’s.
And I thought it was chilly when it was 46 degrees for my lunchtime run today.
I am impressed: I honestly do not think I have been in -2 degree weather in my life.
Celsius or Fahrenheit?
I was out Sunday morning for 5 miles on the trail, it was 7 degrees at start and all the way up to 9 at the finish!
What I need better next time: thicker gloves, face covering (the beard isn’t enough), and thermal underwear
.
degrees F.
on the colder day, top was thermal long sleeve, regular LS, windbreaker. Bottom running tights and wind pants over shorts (no wind brief - it wasn’t that windy), headband, gloves and wind mittens on top. all made w the “tech fabrics” which last forever it seems.
I had more I could have loaded on but I was dressed for it in that kit.
at the end of the run (I wasn’t out super long tbh) the face is cold. like i can’t form words very well until the face thaws a minute

i would have appreciated some shrinkage, like tucking a turtle head back up into its shell to reduce exposure…
i go with running gloves and wind mittens over it on cold days. the mittens aren’t thick. if needed, tucked into end of jacket sleeves. that’s plenty good for very cold temps and allows some maintaining of comfort bc you don’t want too warm/sweaty
I signed up for a Valentine’s Day 5k. Until this week, I think I’d only been to the gym a couple of times in the last few months. If it ever stops raining, I need to restart the couch to 5K app.
As the kids say, “mood”.
Or, they used to say that like five years ago. I got no idea on the current idioma.
First 3 sessions down. I’ll need to do more than the 3 times per week it’s set for to hit the end by the 5k.
I ran 5k the other day, it was my first run in over two months. I was definitely way more sore and way slower than I thought I would be. I’ve really got to push to get back into the habit of running.
You can do it! I believe in you.
Let’s gooooo! Get it done, son.
