Reporting I saw said it was a head-on crash with an oncoming vehicle. Sounds like the lead pack (peloton) had passed and security was not properly securing the road, so onlookers thought the race had passed and drivers started going back on the road. But the rest of the race was still on the road… leading to the crash. I’ve seen claims the driver had realized their error and pulled over, but that Tarling may have taken an inside corner on a blind downhill turn (perfectly reasonable on a properly secured route) and ended up hitting the car anyway.
So in the best case a colossal f’ing failure of race security that cost one life and traumatized countless others. In the worst case it’s that plus a criminally incompetent driver.

It’s a little bit of a shame that he’s mainly known for the surgery. He was a really good pitcher and always seems to be near the top of the “best pitchers not in the hall of fame” lists.

Yeah, not releasing the cause of death when there has been no prior news of an illness or news of a tragic accident for someone so young, is usually a sign that it might not have been accidental.
And the first articles I saw seemed to indicate that there might have been MH issues.

It’s been interesting listening to people speak about Dvorak on the “This Week in Tech” podcast. It sounds like a lot of people really respected him and he helped a lot of careers, but also found him to be an asshole. Also sounds like a lot of people lost respect for him during covid.
I can remember enjoying reading his articles back in the late 80s and early 90s.
