never a great player, but on the team a very long time and an excellent Pinch Hitter. Fan favorite. I met him, around 35 years ago
I remember him being a fan favorite when I was a kid. I was surprised to see he was a member of the Metās Hall of Fame because his stats do look quite pedestrian over his career but he was a member of the original Met team (if only a small cameo) and played his whole 18 year career with them so I can see how he was honored by the team.
Still leader in games played
had led Mets at some point in career
at bats
runs scored
hits
total bases
doubles
HRs and
RBIs
virtually every counting offensive category except Triples and SBs
How many of the 1962 team were on the 1969 team?
i doubt any but him
they drafted the original team old
Pitcher Al Jackson
and Kranepool was only 24 on the '69 team
Mercury Morris, (77), great speed compliment to Csonkaās power running during Dolphins glory years
RIP
Cancer sucks
Pete Rose passed today too.
he 100% had a soon to lapse term life policy, right?
Seems like a safe bet.
Man, I did NOT grow up in a sports-watching house. But I sure remember watching him break Ty Cobbās record. It seemed like the whole world stopped.
RIP
Iāll give him a RIP for playing ball.
Iāll give him a BIH for managing and betting.
So,ā¦ HOIP, Pete Rose?!? (āHang Out In Purgatoryā)
I donāt know. I can think of a lot of much worse things a guy could do besides managing and betting a few times. WAY OVERBLOWN, in my opinion. But then again, I find it really hard to care about baseball, soā¦
Well, he did suck at bothā¦
I have no idea if he sucked at betting, but he didnāt suck at managing.
His managerial winning percentage is 52.5% (412-373).
Thatās about the same as Tommy Lasorda (52.6%), for reference, albeit over far fewer games. Itās certainly far better than the Redsā previous manager who winning percentage was 46.7%.
Other managers are higher, but I donāt think itās fair to say that he sucked.
Yes, itās not only about the winning record, but stillā¦
This is pretty close to my opinion.
Yeah, he clearly broke the rules and deserved punishment.
This is nowhere near as bad as doping or starting a brawl, both of which are punished far less severely.
Now if there was ever any evidence that he bet against the Reds, Iād feel differently. But AFAIK, no such evidence exists.
but he bet on the Reds. So, no issue making sure you had your best reliever on the bet days, or rested your best players when you didntā bet on them?
I see HOF and Lifetime ban as two different things. He had a problem and should be no where near inside info on baseball.
If he was in HOF, i would have no issue
