Republicans Say the Darndest Things!

The views being expressed are held by many people who voted for Trump.

The views expressed have also been presented as “fact” by various right-wing talking heads featured on Fox News, OANN, etc…including by a few talking heads who should know better.

That being said, it is accurate to say that:

  • SCOTUS does accept a different line between “constitutional rights” and the Executive branch’s authority to enforce the border / protect national security when it comes to citizens, vs. permanent residents, vs. others.

  • Legally, deportation is not generally “punishment”. I don’t recall the full set of legal gymnastics to get to why that’s the case, but ISTR it boils down to deportation proceedings being civil matters, not criminal. It is not a crime to be in the US without authorization; it is a tort. If deportation were legally a punishment / if deportation proceedings were criminal matters, the constitutional protections of being entitled to an Article III court, a public trial, and a jury would kick in…which is why the feds almost never prosecute the crime of crossing the border improperly.

(Obligatory disclaimer: I am not a lawyer…)

Seems accurate. https://oklahomavoice.com/2025/04/29/new-academic-standards-set-to-pass-after-lack-of-vote-from-oklahoma-legislature/

My issue is without at least a tiny bit of due process how do you even know if they’re not citizens?

Unless the US has recently passed a law on requiring you to hold proof of citizenship at all times that I’m unaware of…

This sincerely feels like, if not the majority Republican stance nowadays, then at least the most vocal and visible stance.

Due process only applies to citizens, so people suspected of being non-citizens will be deported without the right to a hearing to determine whether or not they’re citizens, because they aren’t citizens.

@Snikelfritz, we’ve already had cases of people producing their birth certificates and ICE rejecting them as not valid. Holding valid proof of citizenship in hand doesn’t guarantee you will get due process. If you were suspected of being a non-citizen then your proof of citizenship may be insufficient, because again, you aren’t a citizen.

There is no such law, but in the past 100 days or so it has become a de facto requirement if you don’t look “European”, and the GOP seems to wish it becomes a de jure requirement at the voting booth.

The reality in the US now is that they can grab you at any time even if you have the correct ID.

And then after a few days in a facility its oops we are sorry but we thought you were somebody else

And they let you go eventually.

But at that point the damage is done. The entire point of this behavior is to terrorise and create a police state environment.

You can fight them in the Courts after but at that point you are up against the resources of the US Govt. Few will want to spend such resources when the US Govt can drag the legal case out for years.

I have put the US on the not going to be visiting anytime soon list with the family at this point.

From a different link: they have seized enough fentanyl that if divided into minimum lethal doses and distributed one each to 258 million people, it could kill them all. How that delivery to about 3/4 of the population, and that the doses would be taken, was not explained.

Trump isn’t being MAGA enough for MTG.

Although her criticism of Trump is that he isn’t extreme enough and not going far enough - too nice to Ukraine, for example. MTG wants the COVID vaccine entirely banned, whereas RFK is just virtually banning it by trying to require unethical placebo testing.

Her complaint about “law fair” is hilarious.

But given that Trump is arresting judges he doesn’t like and ignores 9-0 SCOTUS losses without consequence, I’m not sure what her complaint is.

Her complaints that Congress isn’t doing anything to reduce spending is on Congress, like her.

She complains about election integrity after a resounding Republican electoral victory.

And somehow we aren’t doing anything about the “evil transgender assault”, despite all the rollbacks of human rights.

But MTG has never been accused of being intelligent.

Every day I think we must have hit the bottom and then something like this happens.

I wonder what the free way to enter Mance’s sweepstakes is.

Surely her people wouldn’t forget to provide such a mechanism. Such a failure would make it illegal, if memory serves…

MTG rhetoric on the House floor before the vote on her bill to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

“The American people rose up in a historic election in November of 2024 and they told Washington DC they have had enough of the Democrat embrace and love affair of the cartels in Mexico. But Democrats today are fighting to keep the Gulf of America named the Gulf of Mexico because the cartels are their business partners,” said Greene.

“You would think this would be the easiest vote that the United States House of Representativescould take, because, after all, everybody in here swore an oath to defend our constitution and to defend our laws and our land. Oh, but no, the Democrats can’t do it because we had four years of Democrat control where our borders were wide open and the American people are fed up with it.”

Democrats countered that the legislation was a waste of time.
