Yeah lets give this guy control over one of our governmental agencies.
More realistically, when do we stop letting him launch our spy satellites, and how do we persuade/force him to always use his infrastructure to help our allies and hinder our enemies?
If you need a private business way to understand it think of it like a nondisclosure/noncompete contract. If you do business with the US government, you sign one. If you are so successful that your product/service becomes essential to the American economy you sign one. If you refuse to sign, you can move on, of course we’ll keep the assets involved.
What should we tell him? We’re immediately eliminating all tax breaks for EVs, which is what keeps Tesla going. Oh, and we’re prohibiting investments of foreign funds from designated enemy countries - like, say, Russia - to fund U.S. operations of any company. Good luck getting your buddy Putin to pick up the slack.
What will we tell him? “Please help us investigate our enemies,” because Republicans will probably hold Congress in 2025 and he’d gladly help them do that through legal or illegal means.
I mean, yes this is the obvious thing. But it’s messy if he is caught “talking to Putin” for example. Also awkward for Nasa if we don’t have a good alternative.
It is more messy if we want him to turn on Starlink for Ukraine and turn off Starlink for Russia. Or want him to control Russian propaganda on twitter, while also not limiting our propaganda.
Or sell or not sell rockets to people we aren’t at war with, but want to influence or are vaguely worried about.
It’s not a problem, as long as we all agree who is good and who is bad, and which wars are worth fighting, and how they should be fought. But it gets murky fast imo.
Here’s a list of US Defense contractors. Is it messy if some of these started making weapon systems for Putin? I’m sure Putin would be willing to pay top dollar for some state of the art weapon systems.
The key is Elon Musk doesn’t get to choose who is good and who is bad. That is the government’s job. Currently if we don’t like the government we the people have a say in changing it. Not surprising Musk has joined the faction saying let’s eliminate those checks and balances and silly things like elections.
Yes, that’s fair but Musk isn’t a weapons dealer. Rocketry is weaponish. Starlink and X are just interwebs. The degree to which global conflict depends on things like the internet is unprecedented. I think? Maybe Murdoch and Hearst would disagree.
Spy satellite launches are certainly defense contracts. Though again we might run into a situation where we want to cut Musk slack (or press him into service) if his rockets are far better than all alternatives. Though I guess that’s not a new situation.
Here’s an interesting question: has the military industrial complex been a net positive for the United States? American weapons are truly world class but there is also a dark side to it all in terms of corruption and influence when it comes to foreign policy. Do you really want to give Elon Musk that kind of leverage? I have a feeling that americans have given up on politcians and they are ready to hand over the gov to their favorite capitalists.

“Comedian” opening for Trump’s MSG rally: “Like, I don’t know if you guys know this, but there is literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
Good message of wanting to unify the country.
His jokes got more racist from there, btw.
Bad Bunny started putting out pro Harris messaging after this happened.
Couldn’t starlink be considered dual-use. There are multiple reports of star link being found in weapons.

The two things my MIL keeps posting on Facebook:
If Hating One Man Matters More To You Than Loving Your Country, You’re Part Of The Problem!
Give me the man who sacrificed his wealth to serve the nation over the lady who served the nation to get wealth every single time.
I find it incredibly hard to not respond with a logical response that I know will just get a response of “Deluded”. Sigh.
I would not have guessed that WI and NC have large Puerto Rican populations. Rick Scott and other Republicans with large Puerto Rican constituencies are currently working on damage control.
Forget it. They’re zombies.
You could just say “it’s sad to see people so lost in a cult that they can no longer see reality” and let her think you are agreeing with her…
She knows that would not be a statement of agreement.
