Hurricanes have sustained winds of 74mph, gusts are higher. There are additional criteria other than winds as well.
The sustained winds of a Tropical system are often only located along the leading eyewall, although hurricane force winds on a storm like Helene can extend beyond that 100 miles or so.
Ok, well I don’t know what the sustained winds were… I just saw it reported as “high winds ranging from 50 to 70 mph” so I assumed that was the gusts. I guess I’m not exactly sure. It could have been the eye wall, which I assume “counts”? Maybe only the gusts in which case I don’t know what the sustained winds were.
I assume that “Hurricane Helene” met the storm surge criterion for a hurricane and any other requirements to be a hurricane unless that was all just “fake news”.
U.S. student visa holders can work on campus in certain positions, such as student assistant, research assistant, teaching assistant, or other such positions. They are also allowed to work off-campus if they are enrolled in a full-time degree program at a university or college that is accredited by the Department of Education and if they have received their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Additionally, they may also be eligible for internships or work-study programs offered by their school.is?
This pertains directly to the Musk situation:.
In general, international students in F1 status are forbidden from “engaging in business.” However, immigration law does not expressly forbid F1 visa students from establishing their own business because ‘preliminary business planning’ is not considered ‘engagement’
I would consider raising capital engaging in business and not preliminary planning. His brother has stated that what the did violated immigration law.
Seems like he could make a case that Zip2 was related to economics. I don’t know if he met the other requirements, so possibly he cheated to stay in the U.S. after he finished at Wharton and declined to pursue his PhD. My point was that we can’t blanketly assume self-employment isn’t allowed and we don’t even know precisely what his visa status was at any given time.
And he has disputed his brother’s assertion, which I believe was made as a joke and Elon corrected him, at least insofar as his own immigration status was concerned.
Barometric pressure is usually the key observation value of hurricane strength that most of the other effects correlate with, but there is some aspect of lag between winds, pressure, storm surge, etc. The actual feet of storm surge is difficult to measure along with the exact maximum sustained wind, but we fly airplanes through the eye of the hurricane to measure the minimum pressures to get a sense of what those other things could be.
In any case, once a hurricane hits land, it loses strength pretty quickly. I would guess for anyone living in the midwest, winter weather systems likely generate the strongest sustained winds of the year. Fortunately, trees lose their leaves and this is not generally very disruptive when it happens. Spring storms obviously generate intense short term periods of hurricane force winds, but these are often fairly localized. They also typically occur once trees have leaves on them, so tend to be more destructive.
Helene definitely produced a lot of wind pretty far north, and we still have plenty of leaves, so it undoubtedly left some trees down in the midwest. Another factor is that the strong winds were coming from the East/Northeast which can also be more destructive as its less common, and existnig trees that have repeatedly sustained much stronger westerly gusts fail on a weak point.
“Instead of being in Georgia to help the people of her state, @mtgreenee MTG blew them off and decided to go to the football game in Alabama yesterday instead. It speaks volumes to her lack of focus as a Congresswoman and it really shows she is more interested in fan fare as opposed to helping people in her state. Gross negligence from a woman who is unfit to serve.”
Spared from Loomer’s ire was former President Donald Trump himself, who attended the game with Greene.
Other news about Loomer: She’s threatening that she has information on MTG that could get her indicted. Could be true that she got some insider dirt, also she’s full of crap so could be nothing.
Uh, we’re talking about my hometown. I can assure you that 60+ mph wind gusts and 140,000 power outages is not business as usual for that part of the country. Trees fell on houses. 48 hours later over 21,000 homes still did not have power. I just found out that a friend’s kid was trapped in a school bus for hours.
I’m sure that’s a normal Friday for Miami, but not for Cincinnati. This was not “trees losing their leaves”.
Sure… the cost of living with climate change is also high. I get it. I was just commenting that it’s basically unheard of for Cincinnati to be affected by hurricanes and TP is all like “no biggie!”
