driving shoes? How old are you, seventy?

They are Sparco shoes that look nearly identical to this pic:

I went to vote today. My polling location is relatively close so I walked. I met one of the candidates for office in my election on the street not far from the polling location. That’s never happened to me before. It’s pretty common here that people are out waving campaign signs just beyond the legal buffer distance from the polling location, but seeing the candidate for a statewide election outside my polling location was new.

Even more unusual is that many of you might have also recognized the candidate;

Scott McAfee, presiding judge in the Fulton County election interference trial. Not sure how many other people on the street recognized him.

had that happen once too, but he votes where I do

Like, what’s the real difference between driving in these shoes and driving in:

  • tennis shoes
  • loafers
  • sandals
  • no shoes (socks)

?

I never drive barefoot or in sandals. The real difference is no padding, so you can feel the pedals, I suppose. It’s better with a manual transmission. But I happen to like shoes without padding and thought these looked smart enough, so here I am.

my sandals are leather and strapped to my foot. Ok for driving

won’t drive bate foot or flip flops

I’ve never had any problems “feeling the pedals” wearing my combat boots.

Ski boots? Yes, but not any of my combat boots.

I can kind of see that, though the big waffle soles may not be optimized for quick shifting.

This thread may wind up with me buying a Miata.

more concerned with ankle flexability

I sometimes wear flip flops in the summer, and agree they aren’t great for driving. I kick the one off my right foot when driving and go barefoot.

The sandals with a strap in the back are better for driving, but I haven’t worn that style for a good while.

Those look pretty good for racing. If I end up doing more Autocross events I might pick up something like those. I’ve been driving in an old pair of Sanuks that I like because of the thin sole and rounded edges. Definitely better pedal feel than something like running shoes or even Vans.

I guess if you really need to be very precise on the pedal, you’d want as much “feel” as you can get. I’ve never felt such a need.

Don’t blame me, I didn’t do it!

TIL some people can’t drive in flip flops. I can’t tolerate walking in many flip flops so maybe the ones I wear are unusually adequate for driving an automatic.

I don’t feel safe driving in flip flops, but I suppose YMMV, I see people here driving motorcycles in sandals.
