Made my son sob tonight. He was watching a cartoon where everyone forgot the character’s birthday. He asked me if I thought that would be sad, and I said yes, in fact my own parents have forgotten my birthday before and it was very sad to me. He gave me a sad face and then a hug.
And of course I couldn’t just leave a sweet moment lying there like that, so I added, “I could never forget your birthday! August 18th is one of the best days of my life!” The joke being, of course, that his birthday is NOT August 18th. And his face scrunched up and tears started streaming down his cheeks and it took me 15 minutes of apologizing and consoling him to get him to calm down.
Yeah, I suck.
So maybe I’m actually NOT less obnoxious in real life, and maybe my older son is onto something.

the aug 18th bit is high comedy, timing was off.
my birthday was overlooked by family for a few years. one year (I was 20) we had a family wedding to attend 90 minutes away. dad was writing a check and asked me the date and I told him “aug 18th” (not my day) and he paused and then finished the check. we piled in the car. went to the service. family had been up and at em for 3-4 hours before someone said “hey, isn’t today…?” not sure if I was like this before that or after, but I don’t need recognition of the day. at most i like to pick where/what we do for dinner.

Good thing Mrs. H’s sister never got a complex about her birthday being forgotten, because their mom never got her birthday right.
1 out of 5 dentists approve.
