One night in Oslo?

Be on the lookout for the English words:
Julie Andrews (shouldn’t it be Yul Brynner?)
get tight (Get Thai’d?)

I wonder if Tiger Woods goes shopping at Target on Sundays.

We have a 10 year old staying with us for a week. His foster mom says he is a terror, and she needs a break. I’m not discounting her experiences, but I think some of their issues might just be differences in personality. He is used to having screens at home, his foster mom doesn’t allow screens. She even got rid of her OWN PHONE so he couldn’t have access to a screen. She doesn’t let him stay up past 9 even on weekends, makes him eat vegetables with every meal, etc.

One of the things they tell us when getting certified as foster parents is that a child coming into your home needs to ease into it. So it’s very reasonable to have different rules for foster kids than your own kids (her daughter is 23 and no longer in her home, so the only kids there are foster kids - this boy and his sister). That might mean letting them eat potato chips for every meal while they adjust to being in a foreign place, if they ate mostly potato chips at their own home.

They also tell us that love and boundaries won’t “fix” trauma, and these kids will act out, simply because of their situation.

Anyhow, this kid is having a great time at our house, and has been a normal ten year old kid. He’s sweet and funny and loves animals. He and my husband really get along well, and he has made friends with both our sons. I’m sure if this was a permanent placement for him, the honeymoon period would end and he would probably act out some. But I feel for this kid. I wonder if living in our house, with snacks and screens and lots of fun down time, is going to make going back even worse for the foster mom.

I have to go back to work in five days, after eight weeks off. Sad.

I’m going to go take a disappointment nap now.

I don’t quite recall what Lindsay Lohan looked like precisely in 2004, given that she seemed to age from 12 to 23 to 57 in about 3 calendar years.

My neighbour was raking his yard this past weekend, and I was thinking ‘that’s a bit early’. It’s snowed two days since then lol.

Is there any mechanism to say “y’know what… the first placement wasn’t that great. Let’s try this second placement instead”?

I assume all parties would need to agree to it, which won’t always be the case but might sometimes be.

If Original Foster Mom is at her wits end with him she might do better with a different kid. Maybe an infant or toddler. You’d hate to see OFM burn out and stop fostering altogether when so many kids need foster care.

And it’s not a diss on OFM. Some people click more than others. That’s a completely normal aspect of human existence.

An acquaintance of mine had to essentially “give back” a kid that she and her husband adopted. It just wasn’t working. He was constantly violent (they have 5 other kids, two with physical limitations, so this is an especially big deal) and he constantly said he hated them.

He went to another family for respite care and clicked with them and after the first adoption was rescinded (or however it works) the second family adopted him and it’s working out as well as can be hoped.

My acquaintance and her husband are, from what I can tell, fantastic parents. I don’t think it was them. I think it was a little bit the kid and a little bit being an only child vs one of 6 kids, a little bit the timing of everything, and a little bit just random stuff.

It is definitely possible, and if this kid didn’t have a sister in care, I would probably offer. But…we do not have the space, legally, for two kids, especially since one is a girl (because of the laws about ages of mixed gender sleeping arrangements). And I’m not going to ask to split them up. If the state decided to split them up and we had space, we would take him, but they’d try to find a home for both of them first, as they should.

Wife and I were walking the dogs in a nearby park when I noticed it was absolutely filled with geese poop…turns out “they” aerated the lawn and in doing so left goose-poop-looking wads of dirt everywhere.

Well, if anything, it will demonstrate to the other 5 what happens if they don’t behave.

I hate it when lawns have been air-raided by geese.

Makes total sense.

You joke, but it’s a big problem for the 5 kids, especially the other two who were also adopted. They understandably need LOTS of reassurance that this isn’t the case and that giving back their brother was a VERY extreme and exceptional circumstance.

The other 5 kids all needed counseling to deal with all of the feels they were having (relief, guilt over feeling relief, fear, concern for the no-longer-brother, concern for their other family members, lots of anger, etc.)

My joke was poor taste. I cannot even imagine the emotions involved here. I have had 2 adoptions in my extended family and each went poorly (with lifelong effects), and neither were even remotely in this kind of ballpark.

It’s ok, it’s one of those “funny, but…” things. I wasn’t offended or anything.

I donated to a charity that supported her in the (international) adoption, so I learned more about the whole thing than I otherwise might have and it was quite the saga… not all of which I’ve shared. (They were understandably very worried that the people who had donated money to defray the expense would be upset. Personally I felt nothing but compassion, but I can certainly understand their concern.)

A classmate of mine going back to elementary school.

While you can’t expect everyone to be understanding, I think most people would rationalize “I gave the money to help a kid get adopted, the kid still got adopted” rather than “I gave money to the family so the family could do something nice and they didn’t succeed”.

Yeah , it’s not like it was a “destination adoption” where you could “help fund my scuba adventure…you know, while we’re in the neighborhood…I mean how often am I going to get to go traveling now that we’re parents?”

Just got messaged this on Discord in one of the student servers:

I’m having a party Tmrw night. Feel free to bring some old man life advice.
