I was 2nd youngest of 7 who averaged about 3 years apart in age (so a huge difference oldest to youngest).
I rarely ever had to take care of you younger sibling. I did babysit my nieces and nephews when I was probably 10-16 rarely after that.
I rarely was required to help in the kitchen but did when asked. I milked the cow virtually every day from about 12-18 and took care of the rest of the animals we had (chickens, pigs, other cattle and rabbits). Mowed the lawn and was responsible to get the water when it was our water turn during the summer and make sure it was directed to the various areas for the required time. Taking out the trash cans on trash day. And we didn’t have those big ones on wheels for the automated trash hauling trucks. We had trash cans like you see where the guys ride the back of the garbage truck and empty the cans by hand.
I learned to cook from sitting in the living room while my mom taught my older sister’s 4H cooking group. I learned all of the lingo for sewing when listening to my mom teach my older sister’s 4H sewing group. Cooking is easier to do from hearing than sewing is. Sewing needs more hands on experience.
I did have to help when canning time came around. Usually mostly just carry everything around and wash and mash the fruits for jams. Didn’t have to peel or cut the fruit though.
Oh yeah, I also had to churn the cream into butter.
ETA after seeing Bro’s post: held the light for my dad while he fixed our cars and had to get the wrenches he needed. There is a meme about not being bothered when people yell at you because you had to hold the light for your dad. That was me.

I can sew buttons and mend clothing if it rips along the seams. I used to try to mend clothing with rips anywhere, but I learned it wasn’t worth it.
Canning and churning seems out of a different era.
Sounds like the farm kids had pretty heavy workloads, even the younger ones in the families. Everyone else, though..
I don’t think I live in cicadas territory but do cicadas sound like tinnitus because that is nonstop in my head all the time?

Yeah, buttons and ripped seams I will do by hand but I never really mastered the sewing machine.
I saw this tiny frog today that was about the size of a fingernail. Note it’s size next to the blades of grass.
Any amateur herpatologists care to guess the species?

That is the smallest frog in the state I think, but given that I’m not near the coast now and the coloring appears different I think it’s unlikely.
Best guess is Northern Cricket Frog, but if so this would be a juvenile as it’s much smaller than average.
Just came across an HR person describing a recent US employment trend.
Person puts in their 2 week notice
Employer fires them without cause (as the date to quit is in 2 weeks)
Person then goes on unemployment (vs say getting PILON for that 2 week period)
Is this a thing now in the US?
That would tend to drive up the company’s unemployment premiums. Maybe someone has done the math and figured if we let someone stop work upon receiving their notice, but pay them 2 weeks, it costs more than UI prems (paid to govt UI program) will rise. I suppose this holds if you have a large exodus, but not if you have relatively few people leaving. I also don’t know at what level folks are told “don’t bother coming in” for the last two weeks. Surely not entry level folks.

I would guess the employer is banking on the fired employee not collecting unemployment. If they give 2 weeks they most likely have something lined up and filing for unemployment is such a pain in the ass in some places the employee probably just takes the loss.

everything I have read about younger employees is that the trend is they just vanish and ghost the job they are leaving. have not experienced it myself but in certain employment markets I can see it happening.
if that happened to me I’d be excited bc it triggers severance. but I bet that doesn’t apply to the folks you are hearing about
