Why is everyone on LinkedIn always so thrilled?

Pre-AI, it was a bit cringe when people ramped up the cheeriness dial-o-meter to 11 when they made some update posts.

Post-AI, I think like 20% (or more) of the commentary on Linkedin now is AI-generated.

People are treating it less like a professional forum, and more like an FB-style social network ripe for personal monetising.

So now there are very few professional discussions left.

I’m thrilled to announce that I’m leaving this hell hole of a job to start a new position with soul sucking mortality. :blah: :blah: :blah:

I was an early user of LinkedIn but largely abandoned it since people started using it like FB. I keep my profile up to date but just so that former colleagues know what I am working at.

i was going to a conference. saw that a colleague who was also going used the officially branded post and banner. i just shared their post and said ā€œim going too. hope to see you all there.ā€

even that felt like more than what i wanted to do. but i have sales goals so…im a natural self promoter

I wonder, has anyone thought that when they say with a smile, ā€œJust giving you a hard timeā€ that maybe the person they are talking to is already having a hard time and needs no assistance on that front?

I have come across this Bradford Factor score for HR (they use it for absence management) before in the UK but have no idea how widespread it is.

Is this something that is used in the US as well?

I would say it’s the exact opposite. Very little can’t wait one day… that has almost no impact.

Whereas if I’m off for two weeks my colleagues are absolutely filling in for me.

If I’m sick I’ll often work a series of half days. Sleep in, work 10-12, take a 3 hour lunch/nap, work 3-5. Adjust for meetings but something along those lines.

That has virtually no impact on anyone else. Stuff can certainly wait 2 hours. But I’d really ratchet up my Bradford score.

I did work one place where they tracked ā€œspellsā€ and we had distinct sick/vacation, and it was hugely disruptive. The thinking was that if you take one sick day you may as well take a second and catch up on laundry and dishes and grocery shopping even if you were feeling better. No one ever took sick leave for just one day.

I agree with this. The premise seems flawed, as long absenses are more disruptive when someone else will have to pick up your work.

However, I imagine what they are really trying to measure here is abuse of the system. People calling out sick frequently can be abusing the system. Sometimes it’s chronic illness themselves or for a family member, but often it’s just because they didn’t feel like working today.

The policy does need to be defined to encourage people not to come to the office when they have contagious illness. Showing up sick in person may be most damaging to team productivity as you infect others.

ETA: after I hit send, I realized I did it from the perspective of an office worker. It’s the opposite for many workers. Call in sick for one day and either the crew works short handed or they have to bring someone else in on their day off for many workers. That is very rough on the team.

It can be really rough for healthcare which is why so many go to work sick or send their sick kids to school and daycare. It’s rough on their teams and they’re quick to be written up when calling out.

That’s because healthcare is perennially understaffed with no actual plan for what to do if someone gets sick.

Yup. They have back up call for whoever is on call, but normal hours it’s hit or miss trying to get someone to fill in. Ironic that the field that should be most understanding about illness is punitive about it.

Why do Chipotles always have the shittiest parking lots!? Is it, like, a franchise license requirement or something?

currently the closest one to me is a rather large strip mall, plenty of parking

Really. The three closest to me all have awful parking lots. Makes me wonder if it’s by design so that the stress of bad parking combined with looking forward to the eventual food makes it taste better.

now that you mention it…they all share a shitty parking lot with other places near me. but it isn’t standalone
