For regular glasses transitions aren’t great imo, unless the technology has improved in the 25ish years since I had them. However, I have those type of lenses for my (non-prescription) sunglasses and it’s great to have an appropriate level of darkness to the tint. Regular sunglasses are too dark for variable light conditions and can make it hard to see clearly in some situations, like scattered clouds where it’s mostly not that bright and there are tons of shadows.

I’ve got photochromic ski goggles for this reason.

Does she understand this about you? Hubby & I struggle with gifts and mostly decide to skip them these days.

How do people eat dinner at 8? Do they have a snack at 6? Also what is the polite length of time to stay at a wedding reception? (Wedding is private, so just the reception.)

I did the AncestryDNA test a while ago. Some people I match also have matches to person A for example, but when I look at person A’s matches, the others don’t show up. Shouldn’t the genetic match go both ways??? IANAG :man_shrugging:

:ctm: my wife eats dinner at 4…because that’s when she’s hungry.

I’m the last person who should be answering this, but I would think “shortly after cake is served” is a good time to bestow on the lovely couple your best wishes and then be on your way.

We’re trying to understand each other about this and come to a happy middle about it. I hope we find that middle, since I had to talk her down from giving up on gift exchanging completely after I frustrated her over a $3 sticker she has gotten for me. (In fairness, I changed my mind after the fact bc I don’t actually like sticking anything on my computer cover.) The irony of her wanting to give up is that I already have a cool idea for our upcoming one year anniversary.

We talked more though. Basically, at first I thought she was a little materialistic bc she seemed to place a lot of importance on buying stuff. But over time, I learned that (1) she would rather buy nicer versions of things so they last, (2) as for more trinkety things, it’s not possession of the thing itself that’s important, so much as the physical object being a symbol of the sentiment or occasion it represents.

Marriage is hard. :sob: But we’re both in it for the long haul. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Can you request experiences?

For example, BF launched a pre-emptive strike this past Christmas and suggested that instead of exchanging gifts why don’t we go on a trip instead. (Like this was our Christmas gift to each other)

But it doesn’t have to be a whole trip… event tickets or a massage or something.

Also consumables make good gifts: a bottle of wine or a candle or something you have no obligation to keep forever.

I like my transitions lenses for everything but driving. I have a pair of Rx sunglasses for driving but the transitions are great for everything else.

This is the correct answer per the formal rules of etiquette that my mother and grandmothers expected me to know: you don’t leave a wedding reception before the cake is served.

Idk if they even had cake. I was able to greet one of the grooms and hear the speeches. And I saw lots of mutual friends. It was much more casual than I’d initially anticipated. But also rather crowded. Still probably one of the most fun wedding parties I’ve been to.

You left too early!

I’m pretty sure if there was cake it would have been set out on a table. Right? There was a lot more booze than food at this reception.

The last wedding I attended, I thought there wasn’t cake because it wasn’t displayed anywhere. But the couple just didn’t want to do a cake cutting thing; later in the evening it was set out already cut. It was pretty late in the evening, too, well after dinner! We almost missed it (I’m not a dancer or a drinker so weddings aren’t a long affair for us).

Usually, but not always

That’s a good idea.

I’m sure as we keep talking about it we will find something that works for both of us.

The thing is, the venue was a rather small bar. Unless they had some hidden kitchen (and I don’t know where it would have fit) there was nowhere for the cake to be.

I’m not sure where I got the idea that it was a dinner, but hubby had looked up the venue so we figured out before we went that it was not.

For curiosity’s sake, I’ll ask my daughter, who stayed much later than we did.
