What is the point of the Buick brand? Is it basically for old people who can’t afford Cadillacs?

I also don’t understand the point of the GMC brand.

Sorry, that wasn’t a question: What is I also don’t understand the point of the GMC brand?

Remember their ads a few years ago that were basically, here are some nice looking cars that are Buicks, you’ll be shocked because we know you forgot we even exist.

I like Buicks though, I think they look nice.

I think Buick is there to sit between Chevy and Cadillac on the spectrum of luxury. And last I heard, the Chinese market LOVED Buick.

The GMC thing gets me, it feels like the tiniest step above Chevy. But maybe it doesn’t cost much to make the extra badges.

Something convinced my dad to trade in his 4 year old Silverado 4x4 for a brand new Sierra 4x4 a couple of years ago. Same color of maroon/red. Old truck had maybe 20k miles on it. I literally had no idea what he was talking about when he said he bought a new truck.

My parents love Buick. I think they are on their 4rd Enclave. For some reason they thought buying a Honda Pilot in the middle of their run was the right decision (any time they were in the Pilot I once owned, they brought up how much they loved their Enclave).

I was almost ready to check them into a home.

This would’ve been better if it had said “4rd Ford”.

I was thinking the Enclave hadn’t been around all that long, so I googled. That model started in 2007 CY as a 2008 model year, so they’ve had 5 new SUV’s in 17 years? Plus traded in a nice low mileage truck for another new one? Holy depreciation batman.

I like the Enclave. But my superintendent has one, so it would feel awkward to copy off her. (Plus I want to pay more of the current car off first. I will not willingly roll up more negative equity again.)

17 years? I was questioning if this was their third or fourth, but pretty sure it must have been 4. I know they had one in 2008 when i was car shopping and settled on a pilot. They
replace their cars every 3 or so years when the warranty is up.

Yes, holy depreciation is right. It would be nice if they were buying cars that i could use when they were ready to turn them in.

Maybe I’ll take their current enclave from them in a few years when our current cars turn over to the kids after they start turning 16. Id rather have a minivan, but likely won’t really need one at that point any more.

The truck is just too big. Doubt it will fit in the garage very well. I had a midsize truck for a while and while truck look cool, they do just about everything poorly. Minivans look ugly, but are amazing at just about everything.

My parents have plenty of money and this seems to be their only real expense besides groceries, no point in worrying about it.

That’s good. Someone I know convinced themselves that they “need” a new car every 3 years for reliability reasons despite struggling with debt. That’s stupid. If you have the money to burn, go ahead. That’s not what I’d burn the money on, but everyone has their priorites.

I channeled a bit of their energy last time i was faced with spending $1500 on tires and thought “maybe its time for a new car.”

Now that i have been car payment free for at least 5 years, i should hopefully never see one again.

I generally drive my cars until they start having questionable reliability. These days that’s generally at least 10 years or 125k miles, whichever comes first. Obviously many cars stay reliable longer than that. My current vehicle is 8 years old and running well, so I don’t plan on replacing it anytime soon.

I haven’t ever gotten stuck with a lemon vehicle though. If I got a lemon I would likely look to replace it ASAP.

I’m usually a buy and hold person myself. Until the engine basically dies and it costs about what it’s worth to fix. :sob:

I went dual car many years ago, so i split mileage now between two. My minivan should get the kids into college as it closes in on 20 years and 100k miles.

I’ll need new brakes this fall, and probably new tires next year. Maybe something major goes wrong and i have a decision to make. The kids can learn to drive in something big, safe, and cheap.

I might be retired before my fun car hits 50k.

Cars look good and last forever, especially when parked in a garage. I drove one of my first vehicles for 16 years. It spent most of the first two years parked outside and was turning into a rust bucket when i finally sold it.

So yeah, my parents idea of buying a new car every 3 years hasn’t really appealed to me.

Back in the day, warranties were 3/36 (which is still somewhat true for bumper-to-bumper), so folks would trade to avoid out of warranty cars. And cars were less durable then too.
