Random Political Thoughts

IFYP.

So, it’s 2026 and we’re half-way to the next US census.

I just encountered this map showing projected changes in the allocation of Congressional seats…

Let’s pretend you could wave your magic wand and 3 members of the Trump administration would be out of politics forever. Other than Trump himself, pick your three.

Stephen Miller, Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem

Miller and Vought would be tops on my list, but I struggled with the third. I think many of the rest are just sycophants doing dear leader’s bidding, so fire one and another emerges. That includes Bondi, Noem, Hegseth, Patel, Bessent, Lutnick, Vance… I’d lean RFK Jr for my third selection, but could be convinced about others.

The GOP in Georgia have been working on two massive tax cuts. First they want to eliminate the state income tax. Second they want to eliminate property tax on your primary residence, which is the major source of funds for cities, counties, and public schools. So far it seems they are just looking for a free lunch, as the proposed corresponding hike in state sales taxes isn’t nearly enough to make up for the revenue loss. It’s also of course regressive taxation to push virtually most state and local taxes to sales tax.

What is your local sales tax?

We have VAT at 20% over here.

If there is a big flat rebate, then it is progressive. That should equal roughly how much tax someone on the poverty line would pay in sales tax.
As T_P suggests, the VAT needs to be pretty high. And say goodbye to tax revenue from large cities on the border who will buy high-ticket items in the state next door.

State sales tax is 4%, but local cities and counties can add sales tax too so it typically winds up in the 6-9% range. Where I live it’s at the top end. Property taxes can also be significant which cover most of local city and county services. Income tax is 5%, which pays for about 44% of state services.

No rebate proposed.

Right now food is not subject to sales tax, which helps the low end a little. Depending on which guy you listen to about how they will eliminate the income tax, they might start taxing food.

Also services are generally not subject to sales tax. They might tax that too.

It all should be taxed as well as requiring a flat rebate per citizen. Defining “citizen” might be the hard part, or an easy way to make some people “not citizens.” And it’s GA, so, you know… racists.

All there in the the “Fair Tax” leaflet.

This proposal is not at all about equitable or fair taxes.

Yes, it is being made by politicians and their donors.

The GOP must be pushing this everywhere, I have seen a version in my area as well. Double the sales tax and eliminate the income tax. I am sure anyone living along the state’s border will just drive over there to buy anything that doesn’t make the exclusion list, like food.

Need more songs of protest.

Only Trump can be Xi’s friend!

We all know Trump is a Russian agent, but is he also secretly a Chinese agent trying to get the world wanting better economic ties with china?
