Nice ending there. Extra rain, every player turned mortal and humble.
It was good for the USGA that Spaun won with a few birdies coming home. The rain made the rough completely unplayable, and in some spots the fairway was suspect even where there wasn’t officially standing water. Amazing work by the ground crew though.
Make Albatross, Fall Flat On Face
Nice cruise to a win by Scheffler. Contest for second was up and down.
Bump…
“We gotta change this so we can all make more money. Who cares who is the best golfer or that shit. ENTERTAIN!”
“The sports business is not that complicated,” said Rolapp, a former NFL executive. "You get the product right, you get the right partners, your fans will reward you with their time because they’re telling you it’s good and they want more of it, and then the commercial and the business part will take care of itself.
So, what can golf do to “get the product right”?
- Pay the golfers just to show up? No, that doesn’t seem to be working at LIV. Or, maybe it is and I don’t know because I wouldn’t follow an individual sport like that.
- Certainly don’t need a tournament every week, especially if the tournament relies on top golfers showing up.
- Playoff is dumb. Can make like it is, an invitational four-week tournament separate from the Tour, but with different prize money and incentives to finish high (like guaranteed spots in Majors or something). Also, have different types of tourneys. Maybe a four-ball knockout with a random draw. Then alternate-shot knockout the next weekend, again a random draw. Get individual points that accumulate. Then Top 16 points-makers play Match Play knockout.
- Mic them all up.
- Shot clock on the green. 3-4 minutes for each putt. That’s gotta stop.
Etc.
You wouldn’t follow LIV? Or golf (an individual sport) in general?
I do not follow LIV.
Does golf in general have appearance fees?
My bad…I mis-read your statement.
so it’s ryder cup week! on tuesday i happened to wear a shirt that was white, with red and blue stripes. got asked by a dude if i was prepping for the ryder cup w this shirt choice. he was disappointed when I asked him to clarify if that was this week, and bc of that, no the shirt was just top of the pile to be worn
Luckily I have no plans to be out that way, traffic will be horrific
Gotta get the hype up, since the actual competition can’t do it anymore.
Need rivalries, no matter how trivial or artificial.
It’s The American Way.
Looks like the MAGA folks have now infiltrated Golf.
This type of behavior is really not acceptable.
LIV Golf will start disintegrating soon enough:
Now, Brooks, all you have to do is go through Q-School… Wait., that is over.
OK, win a tournament that you’ve been given an exemption to. You’ll get plenty.
Just follow the rules to get back on. No one needs to give you any special dispensation for playing games instead of golf the last four years.
Tiger Woods has a special exemption, for winning 80+ events. Brooks has won… nine. Yes, some majors as well, but they are not part of the Tour.
He won the PGA Championship (a major) in 2023. That brings an exemption, like 5 years. The issue is that will the PGA un-suspend him (or whatever non-eligible status they threw at the LIV guys).
ETA - he doesn’t need to qualify to show he has the skills (or recently did) to play on the tour. it’s lifting the administrative shunning
Is that a PGA Tour exemption or just a PGA Championship Single Annual Event exemption?
the google
Yes, winning a major championship grants significant PGA Tour exemptions, typically a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour , entry into other majors (like the Masters, PGA, and Open), and often a lifetime invitation to that specific major. This means a major win secures a player’s playing privileges and entry into top events for years, far beyond a regular tour win’s typical two-year extension
Cool.
Masters is the only major with a lifetime exemption for itself. The rest are five or ten years. I think.
Need more info on what exactly “Past Champion” means.
Also, here.
Yes, I am doubting the AI response.
the tour suspended/punished the LIV golfers for what they were doing. (correctly)
to be allowed back, that suspension has to be lifted and they’d need to be reinstated. and then qualify if needed, but koepka doesn’t need Q school - he has exemption that he earned IMO. but the suspension blocks his participation so he has applied for reinstatement.
Brooks has a 1 year exception for being in top 50 all time if he would choose to use. As noted, he wouldn’t need it right away.
The PGA could make an announcement that any multiple major winner could return with immediate relief. That would cover Brooks, Bryson and Rahm. Without those 3, LIV has nothing but a bunch of has beens and younger guys people don’t know. Bout time it died.
Brooks is coming back. Sounds like path back is for majors and Players winners from 2022-25, give up equity for 5 years, make charitable contribution (Brooks is $5m). Smart call. Path back for Bryson, Rahm and maybe Cam Smith.
