Professional Golf Thread

This was a tough one as I posted on other thread. I played with him and watched him overpower a tough course and display a crazy short game and brilliant long irons. 8 birdies while throwing down a dozen drinks of a wide variety. I hit the ball a long ways and his was still going up at mine. Through it all, a down to earth guy. I hit a 4 hybrid to a 215 back left stick and left myself 25 feet after hitting center of green. His response was in any tour event, that would be a top 25% shot. He knew when we got to final par 3, a 220 over water that I needed to hit green to hit all par 3s. It was great to play with him and I look at the video I took of him frequently to help w my swing thoughts. Happy he got his life on track for a bit. Very sad it’s over. Definitely praying for him.

Lexi retiring.

Oh, and subtraction is hard!

Thompson, 29, is expected to address the media Tuesday at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the site of this week’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Thompson, a onetime child prodigy, will be making her 28th straight start in the U.S. Women’s Open. She was the youngest golfer to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open – doing it as a 12-year-old at Pine Needles in 2007 – and she made the cut in the major as a 14-year-old in 2009.

Dang…impressive, even without the toddler-starts!

I’ve been telling people I’m 29 for quite a few years now.

Is the US women’s open held more that once a year? Or did she participate as a 1 year old?

We knew right away either Scheffler or the cop had to be lying their ass off.

This was a strange week for me. First, Murray passes away and he is someone I played with and now Lexi retires. Last year, a guy I play with set up a match w our skins group to play against a Ca club. First day was 9 holes better ball, second 9 was alt shot and next day was 18 hole singles. I hadn’t met my partner before since he didn’t play with us much. He was a kid with Down’s Syndrome that was a 7. His Dad helps him w clubs and reading putts. First day was Sat after the Shriners started. Lexi missed the cut. She is a family friend of my partner and came out to watch some. She introduced herself as Lexi. My partner told her to put on some sunscreen. He then birdied the first hole. Strange that 2 golfers I had experiences with had big events, both related to mental health in same week.

US Open starts tomorrow, at Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina.
McIlroy getting backj with his wife.

Guess he decided NOT to take that blood money after the divorce would have been final. (Speculating..)

Meanwhile, "yeah, let’s put Scheffler and Schauffle in the same group!!

And this stupid question from some stupid reporter:

How exactly does one “target” another golfer?

exactly - isn’t the premise when any other name is offered that “I want to beat THAT guy (too)!” ?

“Nah. I don’t need to win. I just need to beat Scottie!”

Golfers don’t.
Media do. They do like their con-TROV-ersies. And golf has few if any. Better to make some up.

Simple math:

  1. In order to win this tournament, I will have to play better than everyone else, on average.
  2. I cannot control how other golfers play.
  3. Ergo, I have to play my best.
  4. Goal: Try to birdie every hole, par at worst. When eagle is possible on Par 5’s, go for it, relative to leaderboard position. Knowing for every hole what is possible and what the best golfers will consistently do is key.

Looks like the greens at Pinehurst are extra firm. Should be an interesting weekend

Not sure why USGA feels the need to make exemptions for LIV golfers:

There is a qualifying process for anyone in the world to attempt. If they are that good, and not simply retiring from competitive golf to play silly games for blood money, qualifying will be a cinch.

Three LIV Golf players – Dean Burmester, David Puig and Eugenio Chacarra – made the field through final qualifying. Sergio Garcia, playing in his 25th straight U.S. Open, was added as an alternate from final qualifying Monday.

Whan said there were 35 LIV Golf players who were eligible to compete in final qualifying, but most elected to not attempt to make the field.

“If they really wanted to be here, they could go play 36 holes and qualify. And some did, to their credit,” Whan said.

But they want to be there without doing anything. Just sitting on their butts, attempting to use their “privilege” to deserve their spot. Maybe their blood-sugar-daddies will bribe the USGA to have a separate and unequal process for their LIV children.

that’s the upside of the LIV in a nutshell. I don’t begrudge the benefits they DO get (piles of cash from an oppressive regime, shorts, guaranteed cash for events, 54 holes, etc.) but they can spare me the complaints that the whole world isn’t sorting it all out for them

Agree that exceptions do not need to be made

I disagree that qualifying for the US Open would be a cinch for the top golfers. Golf is a game with way too much variance and too many (hundreds/thousands) exceptional golfers to imply that the “best” will qualify. Only a small fraction of the 35 would qualify if they attempted. I would also say less than 1/2 of the top 50 USGA golfers would qualify.

My impression is that LIV is slowly but surely going to get what they want. At the end of the day almost everyone involved in professional golf is in for the money and the Saudis have 1/0 money.
