I’m honestly surprised how everyone plays video games. I love video games and played a lot when I was young. Id love to still, but just don’t seem to have the free time.
The only game I’ve played in the past 6 months has been Runescape 3. And then, I’m only logging in to do the dailies like once a week or so. It’s $10 a month and I probably play it maybe $10 a month. I thin a buck an hour is worth it.
(Sine note: I have played some Splatoon 2 on the Switch. Usually it’s late at nite and I can’t sleep. Those nights I usually just camp out in the TV room so I don’t bug my wife by tossing and turning. I fire up the Switch and play some rounds of Splatoon 2. So fun.)
Used to play a bunch of FPS and RTS games but lately have been into single player type world building games that have a RTS flair. Factorio and Rimworld have been the two I’ve played this year on Steam. Would recommend both.
I need more recommendations from Switch.
Thinking about getting Luigi’s Castle or whatever it’s called.
I like RPG too, any Final Fantasy recs? Never played any of them.
Oh I’ve seen youtubers play the game There Is No Game, apparently it’s on switch.
It’s a really fun puzzle game, and very funny. I’m gonna download that.
I’m definitely going to try that one out. Looks neat
You could give Zelda Breath of the Wild a try (I saw up in the thread you were frustrated with some Zelda game in the past..). It’s one of my favorite games of all time. I’ve played some older Zelda games and I think the puzzles aren’t as hard in this game as previous games. Plus this one has a huge world and open environment where you can do things in whatever order you want and ignore the main story line if you choose.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is fun if you like the tactical RPG style some of the Final Fantasy games offer.
what RPGs do you like? Final Fantasy 7 is the most ‘classic’ one but is the roughest graphically, you have 8,9 or X/X-2, and 12 is a bit more modern entry. They’re all standalone and all at least somewhat popular so you can’t really go wrong picking the one that appeals to you on a superficial level.
Dragon Quest XI is on Switch and is supposedly a really good JRPG, albeit one that takes a ton of hours to complete. that doesn’t appeal to me at the moment but it might be up your alley too.
The above recs are good also.
Depends on what you want out of life!!!
Multiplayer or single player?
Easy or hard?
Relaxing or stressful?
Short or long?
Etc.
Yes
Despite loving them when I was a kid, I would not play any final fantasies now. The old ones are old, and the new ones suck.
Divinity original sin 2 is on the switch, get that.
Okay.
Drunk Party games:
Smash Brothers
Bro force
Monaco
Overcooked 2
Untitled Goose Game
Mario Kart
Mario party
Puzzlish:
Slay the spire
World of Goo
Human Resource Machine
Into the breach
Action games:
Hades
Hollow knight
Mario Odyssey (and other Mario crap)
Survival:
Don’t Starve
Slow games:
Stardew Valley
Spirit Fairer
Might also suggest: Heavens Vault
for a slow puzzle game.
added in some comments from games i’ve played
I cannot even. FF7 remake is legit imo.
Gonna add three more Switch recs not mentioned.
Celeste is a phenomenal platformer with a great difficulty system, you can finish the story even if you’re not so great at platformers, or if you are great it will push you to the limits.
Rocket League is great. Soccer with cars, it’s more fun than it sounds and it’s free (with the usual skins and whatnot but nothing affecting gameplay)
Crypt of the Necrodancer and/or Cadence of Hyrule – rhythm combat games with great music. The first one is harder and more of a roguelike-type game, Cadence is easier and more of an adventure plus lots of Zelda characters and tunes. Both are a lot of fun if you like rhythm games.
that was a lot of fun

Factorio
This game is awesome. Really scratches the right itch sometimes.
I just found out about a Substack series of articles on text-based games (think old games from the 70s in BASIC, text adventures, and newer niche games) that I’ve torn my way through over the last couple of days. The author’s going through a game from each year starting in 1971 over the course of this year (up to 2000 now.) The first article is on The Oregon Trail, but it was a much, much simpler version back then versus the one you’ve likely played. Check it out if you have any interest in the history of those kinds of games (or of computers in general for that matter.)
I just grabbed the DLCs for RimWorld and started again. They don’t add all that much, but it’s just such a fun and relaxing and compelling game.
I see more and more clones coming out. Which is good. I think in the long run, people will need to borrow from RimWorld to improve every City Builder / Tycoon / Civ / Tower Defense / Survival genre
