My Crazy Area [Northern Westchester County]

So I live in Croton Falls…

Originally, this said “Croton Falls Reservoir”, but somebody must have complained (it’s Croton Falls Reservoir, btw… I am about to drive past it in a couple hours to do some shopping)

And I didn’t do it.

Okay, so, they’ve arrested somebody for the murder above. Not linking on that one.

This is something that happened this morning, and I don’t know exactly why the following happened:

I first heard about this bc I always check the local Facebook groups as I’m getting my son ready for school… and I heard about this accident and that it was delaying some of the buses.

I know this exact spot, and we often have collisions there. I cannot tell you why other than people are not paying attention. They just assume… “well, maybe nobody will be there?”

[it’s the people on Turk Hill Rd just going on through the stop sign – the Deans Corner - Salem Rd who have no stop signs and will just go through]

I can’t give you a better answer than that.

I don’t know wtf these people are in a hurry for. These are country roads, not the interstate.

Okay, wtf, we’ve had a bunch of pedestrians hit on local highways lately.

In some cases, it’s a “state highway” that is just a regular road going through towns. Fine. People are crossing roads and maybe they don’t wait for lights or the drivers blow through red lights. That happens.

But last night at 2am, somebody was on I-684 and got hit. WHAT?

https://dailyvoice.com/new-york/northsalem/fatal-crash-shuts-down-lane-on-i-684-in-croton-falls/

The incident happened at around 2 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, at the southbound lanes of I-684 near mile marker 24.3 in North Salem, where a car-versus-pedestrian collision was reported, New York State Police Trooper Krystal Paolicelli said.

A preliminary investigation determined that a male pedestrian had been walking in the left lane of the highway when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, Paolicelli said. The man’s name has not yet been made public.

As previously reported by Daily Voice, the crash occurred just north of Exit 8 at Hardscrabble Road in the Croton Falls section of North Salem, where the left lane was closed as emergency crews responded and investigated.

We’ve had a lot of weird stuff going on near our “exit” recently. What are people doing around there?

I would guess most of these type incidents on the interstate fall into one of these 3 categories:

Drugs/alcohol

Car broke down/accident and got out of vehicle

Suicide

walking in the left hand lane of the interstate? that’s drugs/alcohol or a person trying to be harmed.

“Hardscrabble Road” exit - tell me this is the rough and tumble side of town!

I found a Richard Gere popcorn gif, but I’m gonna save it for a special occasion.

“Hardscrabble Rd” has had various names over the years, being the main drag that goes past the apple orchards, etc.

It’s nicely paved -now-. Once upon a time, it wasn’t. Like… 100 years ago.

It’s that time of year:

The next 4-6 weeks is coyote mating season. Please be vigilant in protecting your pets.

(Shared from FB)

“Your dog just went out the back door alone. You have 60 seconds before a coyote can strike.

RIGHT NOW: Coyote mating season (next 4-6 weeks). Males are territorial, aggressive, and hunting small pets.

What happens: Silent. Fast. Your pet is gone before you hear anything.

What to do TODAY:

→ NEVER let pets out alone (day or night)

→ Leash walks only (even in your yard)

→ Scan yard before opening door

→ Motion lights + air horn by door

Your dog and or Cat trusts you to protect them. They can’t protect themselves from a 40-pound predator.

Go outside WITH them. Every. Single. Time.”

From one of the people in North Salem Moms group:

I know coyotes are all around us. Little Mountain Read.

I heard them howling at 6 am so I hand walked at 7:45.

I had my dog in the pen and one went by.

About 80 feet away.

Be aware

People who haven’t learned…. will. Cats and chickens go missing.

and I was concerned the poor kitty might fall through the ice

aaaand somebody in the next town over drove a Jeep on the ice on a lake, it went through the ice, and yeah they died

no I don’t feel like linking to the story

Every year.
No matter how many times people post ‘no ice is safe ice’, people die, get stranded, or dunk their trucks. Every.Single.Year.

I’m super careful. I don’t go on the ice until the operators are out. And I don’t go after we get warm weather, even if the ice is still suitable.

There were just 20 people rescued last week on lake huron. They were out ice fishing, and their ice broke off and started floating away.

And there were trucks that went through here locally as well.

This year we were fishing on 18” of ice, more than enough for a vehicle. One of the students suggested I could drive my truck on the ice. To which I responded, shut up and pull the sled, nerd. My truck doesn’t go on the ice.

Is the barrier in the sinkhole intended to keep anything from crawling out of it?

It’s to protect the sinkhole. You wouldn’t want to damage it, after all.
