My Crazy Area [Northern Westchester County]

sonofaBITCH there is a BEAR on my road

I’m sorry.

For 8-9 months of the year, over here in CT, I cannot have bird feeders out, and if anything is put in my trash barrel it has to be put in the garage, thanks to bears.

The neighbors who deliberately fed the wildlife (specifically, deer) left a while back, but people around here have gardens and just plants in general.

And, of course, trash.

We’re close to the train tracks, forested area, and a lot of creeks/rivers. Where there are lots of fishermen.

My library is covered in beeeees!

Okay, yellowjackets

I had gotten an email this morning about the closure:

I saw signs earlier today but hadn’t read the news:

DOT Gives Reopening Estimate After Collapse On Saw Mill River Parkway In Westchester (Update)

DRAMA!

Last Tuesday night at a town board meeting - the town of North Salem very suddenly, unexpectedly and without public discussion decided to ban pickleball from the Joe Bohrdrum Park due to complaints from one household. No one including our town Recreation Director was aware that this issue was being “discussed”. The complaint - there is play in the mornings, evenings and on weekends that they find disturbing.

That’s enough of that, I think.

Anyway, I understand someone complaining about pickleball (it wasn’t me – and even if I went to that park, I wouldn’t bitch about people playing pickleball to the town council. ffs.) but come on. The park is for playing in.

I assume that is going to be over-turned?

Sounds bonkers

I don’t know if the pickleball ban will stand - but I can imagine they’ll say it can be played particular hours in the park

Stuff like this happened in cities around here so often that the state passed a law that only things that are on the posted agenda that must be posted 24 hours before the meeting except in the case of emergencies, can be acted upon. We normally don’t even discuss things not on the agenda to make sure it doesn’t appear that we discussed the item in one meeting where it wasn’t posted and then got it posted on the agenda of the next meeting and then simply vote on it without discussion which happened previously.

I personally like that rule.

As for pickle-ball, we opted not to add pickle-ball courts to one of our parks, partly because of the possibility of noise issues but mostly because beyond the cost of construction, they apparently have a pretty high cost of maintenance as well.

Are the initials of the householder in question RG by any chance? :tfh:

bc they actually get used? My town converts existing and lightly tennis courts to pb courts. and the nighbors go from little noise to full traffic and the plastic bounce/splat all day. so I get the tension for those living adjacent to it.

the Pickleball drama continues

If I lived in the immediate area, I would file a complaint about the loud flatulence of the residence complaining about pickelball. The pickelball stops at a reasonable hour, but the loud flatulence disturbs all those nearby throughout the night.

I went to one of my grandson’s football games and right next to the field were 12 pickleball courts and they were going at it on all of the courts through out the football game. I have to admit, if I lived next to that, I would have a problem too. Not sure what the answer is, I have read that Pickleball equipment manufacturers are working to find a quieter ball and racket combo to dampen the noise. I hope they are successful in that.

There’s pickleball complainers around here too. I think it must be pretty universal, it must be a loud sport. I wouldn’t know myself, what with it being an old person’s sport.

All you really have to do is limit the playing times to specific times during the day and weekends.

NIMBYs should really not get to dictate these sort of issues.

My town’s noise ordinance has the following language:

There are exceptions for power tools (7am-9pm Mo-Sa, 9-9 Su), construction (similar time ranges), sanctioned recreational events, etc. “Day” is defined as 7am-10pm (9am-10pm on Sundays).

In places with similar noise ordinances, they may not need to take action beyond enforcing the existing rules.

So this happened on a route I normally take to do errands and I normally would have gone through there (I wasn’t feeling well so did not do my errands.. will do this evening)

The speed limit on that stretch is 35 mph for very good reason

The weather was just fine

The person almost definitely was going way too fast

Guess how many people commented “you can’t park there”

Almost a straight NE path to … Armonk, NY. :tfh:

Well, it’s going to get cold soon.

Maybe the pickleball folks can all go over to Yorktown:
