Milestones Toward an Authoritarian Government

Cities are going to need to pay both Trump and Infantino (again) to host World Cup.

Would be interested to know which cities he believes are worthy of hosting games. Of the 50 largest metropolitan areas, I think only Oklahoma City voted for Trump.

The DOJ nowadays is basically a federal tool to be used however possible to circumvent the courts/the Constitution/legislation.

My understanding of the Comey charges is that the prosecution brought 3 charges before the grand jury: 1. Comey lied when he said he didn’t remember being told that McCabe leaked to the WSJ 2. Comey lied when he said he didn’t authorize the leak 3. Obstruction of justice for having lied to Congress, so requires a conviction on 1 and / or 2.

The grand jury declined to indict on 1, resulting in an oddly filled out form that was done in a way that the judge had never seen before. (Assuming that occasionally grand juries fail to indict on some charges, my guess is that means that the judge was perplexed why they didn’t just make a new form.) For 2, Comey testified that that he didn’t authorize the leak, McCabe testified that Comey knew about it, which is different than saying Comey authorized it. And some people are saying that the IG already looked into it and found that Comey didn’t explicitly authorize it, so there seems to be a fairly solid defense against 2. Which makes 3 fall flat.

A federal prosecutor in Florida was fired because he criticized Trump in 2017 on his blog, prior to becoming a federal prosecutor.

Wow, the Comey indictment details are embarrassing.

Interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan got a grand jury to indict former FBI Director James Comey on two counts. But Halligan showed her inexperience Thursday as the jurors rejected a third charge, and she submitted the wrong documents to the judge.

It was Halligan’s fourth day on the job. She was formerly Trump’s personal lawyer, and recently led the president’s efforts to de-emphasize slavery at the Smithsonian museums.

Having never prosecuted a case before, Halligan scored the position after her predecessor failed to go after Trump’s enemies with sufficient zeal for the president’s liking, seemingly because of, well, sheer lack of evidence against them. Relatedly, in a memo this week, prosecutors advised Halligan not to pursue charges against Comey, citing insufficient evidence.

The newcomer went it alone Thursday, as MSNBC’s Ken Dilanian reports that Halligan “presented the Comey indictment all by herself to the grand jury,” a sign that she “may have a problem finding a prosecutor in office to work on the case.” The indictment was also signed only by Halligan, according to The New York Times, while “typically such filings are also endorsed by career prosecutors who have gathered the evidence in the case.”

Trump doesn’t understand things like professional experience or specialization. All Trump knows is that she is a lawyer and good-looking by his standards.

This was a bit like sending a casualty actuary to a pension committee meeting or having a pension actuary set car insurance rates.

Even scarier than many of the other steps we’ve seen.

So I have added Portland to Seattle to the list of US cities that are no longer safe for me to visit.

It otherwise would be. Even reading right wing news sources, I can’t figure out much of a pretense of justification for this. There are protests at ICE facilities, they occasionally turn violent, but articles describing the violence include incidents going back to June so it’s not clear how much violence there factually is.

You are assuming this is random.

I don’t believe that it is. They are putting the national guard at key locations around the entire country.

Trump isn’t driving any of this. Its Miller and his ilk.

Trump just goes along with it because it allows him to create drama and sensationalise it (for him its all about the media exposure).

It is normalizing the use of the US military on the civilian population. I think it’s laying the groundwork to do it on a widespread basis when needed.

Apparently Trump is going to send the army to Portland because of something he saw on TV last night

Well that is more justification than he often gives for his actions.

And far more believable than saying it was due to something he read

This is apparently a video of the antifa siege on the Portland auxiliary ICE office
