Looks like abortion is about to get outlawed across America

“ The leaked Supreme Court opinion draft that would overturn Roe v. Wade has ignited a firestorm across diverse faith communities. ”

Are they lumping TST with “faith communities”. My daughter says TST just makes stuff up so they can protect certain illegal acts as religious exemptions. Does FOX think TST actually performs ritual abortions? I might have believed that in a past life. Am I being brainwashed by my daughter who is secretly a Satanist?

Probably from reading banned books.

It’s what TST is itself saying it will do, if necessary. You have to read the article, though, and follow to the TST tweet:

States that outlaw abortion and do not grant exceptions present more significant challenges, but TST has a number of plans that we will be undertaking quite soon. First, we will be suing the FDA to permit TST access to Mifepristone and Misoprostol for use under medical supervision as part of our religious abortion ritual. This request is being made under Federal RFRA. Unfettered access to these drugs would be a considerable step toward enabling TST to perform our abortion ritual without government interference.

This is not a very civil or respectful post. It’s a shame too, because I’m sure you could have made any number of wonderful, interesting points.

Sure, why don’t we both make more interesting points?

TST are self-proclaimed trolls. Basically the same as the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Fox is doing you a disservice by not explaining this.

And to follow-up, my wife was doing PPT slides at 6 pm last night, while I played video games with our kid. The 21st century dumb.

Just to be clear, you think my post was 100% serious? :grinning:

It’s hard to say? You seemed to undermine your own points as part of the joke???

I did read the article. I was just thinking about what I might have concluded from such a headline in the past vs. what I conclude now. And I do really wonder what journalists think. And if they consider TST a faith community, albeit not the same kind of faith community as most in their audience would belong to.

TST is an interesting group: whether they are being satirical or straight in their pronouncements may not matter. Monty Python provided a useful public service imo.

I find some of TST stances are similar to those of the ACLU but TST is more entertaining in how they communicate. Glad to see they are in no way censored in Canada nor in the US.

LOL, yes, if you go far enough back in time the political situation changes.

No. She doesn’t have the same partisan history as Kavanagh. He authored the Star Report and worked on the GWB legal team in Florida during the 2000 election.

Plus, Kagan was even favored by Scalia to join the court. Here’s what he said to Obama’s advisor:
“I have no illusions that your man will nominate someone who shares my orientation. But I hope he sends us someone smart.”

“Let me put a finer point on it. I hope he sends us Elena Kagan.”

Probably

I don’t know if Fox News is doing so, but I do know there are liberal Christian denominations that are pro-choice as far as the law goes, despite being anti-abortion in religious principle.

For example: Episcopal Church statement on reports concerning Supreme Court case pertaining to abortion – The Episcopal Church

Yep. From what I’ve learned in the last few years, if I ever leave the denomination I grew up in, Episcopal is high on my list.

It tough to argue with Kavanaugh’s record as a circuit judge though. 14 of his cases were later heard by the SCOTUS and they agreed with his rulings in 13 of them.

I remember being struck by his lack of awareness of the nature of “alcoholic blackouts”…or skirting the issue. When responding to the possibility of having experienced alcoholic blackouts as a youth, he indicated that he would have remembered if he had passed out due to drinking…when “alcoholic blackouts” don’t actually require unconsciousness. (I.e., you’re so blitzed that you do stuff that you have no recollection of later.)

That being said, aside from the conservative bias on his interpretation of the Constitution, his record as a judge (pre-SCOUTS, at least), wasn’t bad. I read a few of his opinions, and they were well-reasoned even if I didn’t agree with all of them.

Sure. His circuit judge record could line up really well with the SCOTUS’ rulings, but that’s only one of the things I think we need to be considering when nominating somebody to the SCOTUS. It’s a lifetime appointment to the most influential body in American government. I think maintaining faith in the integrity of the court is very important to keeping America’s faith in its institutions. So Kavanaugh’s history as a political operative damages the appearance of the court’s non-partisanship. His temperament is also questionable. He completely lost his cool during his confirmation hearings. Ultimately in my mind those two negatives significantly outweigh his positive circuit court record.

I also think Thomas has done significant harm to the country’s faith in the SCOTUS as an institution. Between being credibly accused of sexual harassment and then subsequently being married to somebody who acts as an extremist in political circles (while not recusing himself from cases directly involving her) his time on the bench has caused more harm than good.

Robert, Gorsuch, and Barrett don’t have any of these issues. So it’s not like it’s a partisan thing. (Although Gorsuch’s and Barrett’s lack of care for stare decisis is now concerning.)

I guess I’ve just always viewed the SCOTUS as an extremely important American institution. It’s important that it’s viewed as a non-partisan body. Kavanaugh’s nomination and appointment clearly damage that view, as does the games that have been played with the nomination process. Maybe I’m still just a naive little boy and need to start viewing the SCOTUS the same way McConnell does, as a political body to be manipulated.
