Israel - Hamas War October 2023

I’m guessing there is plenty of blame to go around on both sides for this particular question.

More on this story. More scummy behavior from Israel and its backers.

This does not surprise me.

Remember folks, these people consider themselves the good guys

There is no point in negotiating with Israel.

We need a full on embargo.

They are still killing children with impunity.

And then there is this. What a joke of a country Israel has become.

BTW I finished reading A History of the Modern Middle East, I consider it one of my favorite books and essential reading for anyone wanting to opine on the situation in Palestine:

Most books on the history of the Middle East have biases. Did you find his to be pretty objective?

Yeah lmk if this is a good book.
I am incredibly ignorant of the history of the region. So eignorant i likely cant detect bias. But id be interested in getting an education when im on vaca and have time to read.

I thought the author did a good job. I don’t think it’s possible to be completely objective but if you’re like me who had never read anything about the middle east beyond basic world history in high school, I think it was highly informative. You gotta start somewhere and this is a good place to start. Then one should follow up by reading other sources, including opposing ones, to form an opinion.

There are some critical reviews of the book on Goodreads so you can check those out. The biggest detractor who rated the book 1 star seemed to have a lot of beef with some details but who I think missed the much bigger picture in that much of the conflict you see today was caused by the decisions of imperialistic and hegemonic powers, which is a premise that is much harder to disagree with.

Thanks Boss. I’ll download a copy before I leave.

The books on the region that I have read had pretty obvious biases but this one sounds fairly balanced. Since the author was a local prof I will give it a try.

I found A Peace to End All Peace by Fromkin as a good historical background on the Middle East and the involvement of the West in shaping the modern borders. It was published in 2001, so it will be missing recent developments.
