I have a burr grinder for my moccamaster. I’ll assume good enough for now.
Not sure what i want, just seemed like something that might be fun to play around with on the weekends. Something to buy with a bit of the Christmas money from parents. Might just keep an eye out for a good deal.
It’ll make espresso, especially if you have a pressurized portafilter. And as discussed above, if you aren’t drinking straight espresso, pulling the perfect shot doesn’t matter.
I used to make espresso with one of those grinders with the spinning blade. The $30 things. Got me by for college and a few years beyond.
I’d say check out the Bambino, I think Target recently had them for around $260 or so. They are smaller and don’t take up much space.
It’s a Nespresso. It’s fine and like a third of Europe seems to use them. But I think one thing that really helps make better coffee is fresh beans, and Nespresso isn’t fresh.
I will say the as far as pod systems go Nespresso is probably the best. At least the one we have (virtuoso line?). If your only experience is with a Keurig it is worth finding a store with one to taste it, if convenience is your goal.
Nah, i like real coffee from real coffee beans. I was not familiar with Nespresso and didn’t realize it was a pod system.
For the extreme inconvenience option in pusuit of the prefect cup, you can even roast your own coffee beans. A long while back a local roaster had a light roast of beans from the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe region…a really nice, bright coffee with strong berry flavors. I have not seen this since then as most roasts i have found have been to dark and i find that took over the flavors i was going for.
But then i discovered the $20 popcorn air popper i had could be used to roast coffee. So i bought 5 pounds of green coffee beans from the region, and can now play around with roasting it the level i want.
Things to know if interested… its really easy to do. Roast them outside because it will smell like shit (nothing like the finished product, closer to burnt popcorn) and make a mess as the outer parts of the coffee flake off and fly out of the air popper. It takes<5 minutes to roast. The beans will pop a bit like popcorn.
I haven’t tried making anything more than a medium roast, so not sure what happens trying to do something darker, but i assume it should be fine.
I suppose it could work, hope you have a good vent for your stove top. It really smells pretty bad for a product that smells amazing at the end.
The air popper works really well as it has a fan that constantly blows and rotates all the beans inside, and blows off the crap that flakes off. That all would seem difficult to manage on a pan. Might take a few tries getting an even roast.
I guess I’m not 100% sure with the air popper if it is the hot air doing the roasting or the metal cup the beans sit in.
